View Full Version : Post Count - Is something missing?

I know I'm old, decrepit, memory shot to bits and past it, but didn't the number of posts by a member used to be shown on his/her posts?
Or did I dream it last night? Somebody please enlighten me!!

Was about to put a post in the Help section but saw your post and moved it to here.
It has been mentioned by quite a few members that it would be a good idea to remove it from the posts so I thought I would give it a trial.
It is still on the Members profile so if you do want to know you can view it there.
At the end of the day it is about the quality of the content of a post, not the number of posts.
See how it goes for a few weeks. Post your thoughts on the matter here.

Hi Steve,
I think it's a good move on your/ausfish's behalf. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Identifying members as Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum is 'status' enough (imho).
Like you said, if people are really THAT interested in the number of posts a member has, they can look it up on their profile.
Furthermore to what Shane said, hopefully it will stop some of the post whoring and lead to (more) quality on the boards.
Cheers,
Herby

I just called in here to put up the same topic and TOL had beaten me to it.
While it feels a bit strange, it is probably a good idea.....but keep it in the profiles.
I think there is too much "chest puffing" about the number of posts, and I'm sure this contributed to some extent to the recent "troubles". Some of "those who have passed to the other side" felt that they had a mortgage on knowledge based on a high post count, even gaining some ownership of the site because of that status.......wrong!!!
Also, although you never mean to do it, you subconsciously view a contribution by new member less than someone with a high count.
Good move - I think....

Maybe I'm lacking something in the grey matter department but I never took any notice of post count at all. I wouldn't have the faintest idea who was more active that someone else.
The only time I took notice was when an unknown member asked me for something. I needed to get a "handle" on the guy, so looked at his profile and posts.

;D Bet it is mate.
I can relate to the old and decrepit bit. Climbed on the Whittley to put her tarp on last night and couldn't bloody get back down without a hand from the missus ::) The kids were rolling around with laughter on the drive..........works wonders for your confidence and self-esteem. I'll get me own back though.......extra veggies for their dinner tonight ;D

logged on tonight & noticed something different - took ages - then ....DOH! - so did search for "post" threads & bingo here it is ...
Good call Steve - think it will improve the overall quality of what is an increasing great website.
Would like to see the topic "flagged" somehow on other boards to generate more response - suggest General Chat right up the top section (whatever the techo term for it is)
Looking forward to the feedback ....

I personaly think status has no place in a forrum and this could probably be taken one step further and show everyone on the same level with no record of posts at all anywhere. Is a Platinum Members advice or point of veiw any more credible than a New Members,I personaly think not, advice can be taken or left and good/bad advice can come from anyone and as previously stated it would cut a lot of meaningless stuff out.

steve good idea,,,,leaves room now to include other stuff that bears a bit more relevance if possible,,, such as location,,,,,,land based//boat,,, this would overcome query's from members chasing info when they could pm,,,
banshee is on the right track,,,,we all learn from each other,, whether your brand new to ausfish and have fished all your life,,, or your brand new to ausfish and fishn',,,,who cares really if ya black blue or silver,,,,
does this response go towards my tally????? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think its a good move Steve,
As others have said, it does not necessarily mean anything in terms of fishing experience or quality of contribution.
In the final analysis it just means that some will probably have better typing skills ;)

Hey guys i agree its a good idea as there are a few people who do look upon newcomers as not knowing enough
I havent come across it on this forum but have seen it on plenty of others
One thing i think is important is Location to be displayed to make it easier when your dealing with people or when they are talking about their fishing adventures

Yeah,
Don't have any problem with not showing the number of posts by a member. As others have said, it's the quality and the info shown that counts.

Location is displayed to the left of the post.
As is yours
Camira Ipswich
Queensland
Australia
But not everyone fills out the details in their profile and it is not worth making it compulsory on registration.
Would be nice though if it was filled out. Save a lot of people asking "Where abouts are you located"

Oops...just a little glitch (the location bit) :)
Doesn't worry me either way...the post count that is...never really looked at them before...only when somebody asked for something from me personally or if somebody was coming around to say gidday :)
Doesn't take long to realise who has decent posts and who is full of their own importance.
Everybody was new once.
Cheers all

To view the location you must have it set in your profile.
Make sure you have the box or boxes ticked
View location in posts: Text or Flag or both.
It is at the bottom under Options

When starting a new post how does one get that little new symbol to come up.
Also Shane J mentioned you can modify a post is that possible once it's in the system.
Number of posts is of no importance. Some members are good post writers others are reading & taking in some quality info on subjects that interest them.
It might be interesting to have post counts on pages read, oops maybe getting off track.
Post count doesnt interest me except when it applies to answering some questions.
I for one dont like answering questions by fly by nighters that join the site ask a complex question, you sit down type out a long reply helping them out only to check and see that they never logged back on to see your reply.
I make a note now not to answer these types that only have 4 or 5 post counts, i do make exceptions to this only if i think the response may help others that read it.
In suming up i find post counts quite valuable in accessing a reply to certain posts...foxy

The New graphic will not come up for you as you have put up the post so it is not new to you. It will display the New graohic to everyone else that hasn't read it.
Also Shane J mentioned you can modify a post is that possible once it's in the system.
Yes but there is a time limit of 1 day.

well ibbo, you should go to your profile and put in a location, cause yours doesn't show!
