View Full Version : Resizing images for use on the chat boards

This tutorial is based on using IRFANVIEW image editing software
You can download it for free for non commercial use at http://www.irfanview.com/
Step 1. Decide which image you wish to put on the chat boards and open it in Irfanview
If you do not want to crop the image simply do the following. See below for info on cropping an image.
Step 2. On the text menu across the top click on "Image" then from the drop down selection select "Resize-Resample"
Or you can simply hold down the "Ctrl" key and click on the "R" key
A popup box will appear on the screen as shown below
http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/uploads/resizea.jpg
Change the image width or height to 400 (Pixels), click on OK. Maximum width or height should be 400 pixels for best display on the chat boards.
Note - If you wish to use the image for your personal pic (Avatar) then enter the image width as 110.
Then select File - Save As
A popup box will appear on the screen as shown below
http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/uploads/resizeb.jpg
Type in the file name you wish to use and select JPG - JPEG Files in the Save as type box.
Another popup box will appear as shown below
http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/uploads/resizec.jpg
Tick the boxes as shown and have the quality setting on 80. You can set this lower if you wish to get more compression to get a smaller file size but you will loose quality.
Now click on Save
Your image is now ready to attach to your post. See this post for info on how to do this
How to attach a photo to your post - http://www.ausfish.com.au/cgi-ausfish/board/YaBB.cgi?board=Chathelp;action=display;num=1074579 208
Cropping an image
Here is a small version of the image I will be using in this example. The original image is 1600 pixels wide by 1200 pixels high with a file size of 856Kb
http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/uploads/resize1.jpg
I only want the image of the boat, not all the background and foreground.
Once the image is opened you can simply click and drag with the left mouse button around the section of the image you want. This will show a grey border around the area you selected. Then click on Edit, then click on Crop selection.
The area outside the outline will be removed and only the area you selected will be left, as shown in the sample below
Now go to Step 2. above to resize and save the image
http://www.ausfish.com.au/chat/uploads/resize2.jpg
After resizing and saving the final image is 400 pixels wide x 279 pixels high with a file size of 19Kb

Steve, the link above to Irfanview doesn't go to Irfanview, it goes to some Xeran.com. Do you know why this is, is Irfanview still available. I have been unable to find it through the search engines.
Any help would be appreciated.

Another extremely easy way to resize photos...
Click on the link below to go to Microsoft Power Toys. On the righthand side of the page and down a bit you will see the program Image Resizer exe Download.
This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click. It is only a 521 KB download.
Just click on it to install then to resize Right Click the photo you wish to reduce and select the size. It will then create another smaller copy of that photo in the same folder whilst leaving the original as it is.
For example if the original photo is 1 MEG then on Large = 157KB, on Medium = 109KB, on Small = 77KB, on WinCE = 24KB and you could get them even smaller by resizing one of the smaller ones again.
Dead simple to use!

I find "Picasa 2 " a good program for cropping and resizing

Thanx Hoges
Your a legend, for me anyway. I always prefer to use all the Microsoft compatible program downloads. Just to be on the safe side. I have just downloaded the program powertoy. Here goes, as now I can resize a photo(and post on the chat board) of my favourite jig(I have to buy it from over in Perth as they do not sell it over here in Cairns)

if I have a pic on my pc I right click it and send to mail recipient , it then asks if I want to make the pic smaller click yes and send it to yourself, and then you have your pics at 100 KB. not sure if its easier but it works for me.

Mac users have a much easier option (as always! ;D )
You can download a free Beta version of Skitch from http://plasq.com/skitch A little video there shows what it is all about.
All you do is to copy your picture with one click and then resize it by clicking on the corners and moving the picture in or out ...
http://img.skitch.com/20080429-kgn3y4884wemdq121w5k93n65t.preview.jpg (http://skitch.com/charleville2/kx84/untitled1)Click for full size (http://skitch.com/charleville2/kx84/untitled1) - Uploaded with plasq (http://plasq.com)'s Skitch (http://skitch.com)
Then by clicking on the Webpost button on the bottom right, you can uplift the picture to an associated website and then one click on that website copies the picture to embed in websites such as this by just hitting the paste button ...
http://img.skitch.com/20080429-k129dqbyjga5jyi2a8mpqgjkcx.preview.jpg (http://skitch.com/charleville2/kxe8/skitch.com-charleville2-untitled1)Click for full size (http://skitch.com/charleville2/kxe8/skitch.com-charleville2-untitled1) - Uploaded with plasq (http://plasq.com)'s Skitch (http://skitch.com)
As you can see, there is also a range of graphics that you can apply to the picture.
Cropping the picture is done just by dragging in the edges that you want to crop.
All incredibly easy.

Thanks for the link to Shrink Pic and maybe the mods should make a sticky or highlite this for the rest of the members. A new topic describing this may be the way to go.
I am going to pass the link onto as many as I can and recommend that others do so also
That is a cute bit of software and a bldy lot quicker than changing image size in Photoshop unless you want to save it

Hi all, noticed there were a few peeps struggling with photo issues, so i thought this would help.
Photo resizing software that is dead easy to use and only 3.3mb in size. Works with any pics & resizes for uploading or emailing in the blink of an eye.

I just use Paint, open the photo, click edit to open it in paint, go across the the 'image' menu and select stretch/skew. From there you can reduce the overall size of the picture, without losing quality, as long as you don't make it bigger.
Ie, if you want the picture 1/2 the size, enter 50 and 50, this will reduce each dimension by 50%, giving you a small pic, but the same pixels.

or for anyone using MS Office, open your pic with office picture viewer. Select, 'Picture', then 'Compress Picture' and then select the web page option. Presto.

With Microsoft power toys resizer for XP you simply highlight the unopened image and right click selece resize and then a size output then ok. All done in less than three seconds and it creates a new image at the resized size so you do not alter the original. Can't be simpler.

i use shrinkpic
the best thing about it you have to do nothing
when uploading a pic to ausfish for arguments sake, just click the picture you want, and upload, the program automatically resizes the pic to ausfishs requirements
also makes sending emails with lots of photos easier
free too

When adding images it is best to use the advanced post method. Just click on the |Go Advanced" button, bottom right.
That way the image is shown, not just a link to the image
