The great phone company scam!!

I moved house on the weekend and went to reconnect my broadband with op***. They told me, sorry broadband is not available at your new address. I thought, I'll check with Tel***, they said, yes, It could be available but they need to do a 'pair gains' on our line to get it working. Whats your address? I told them, they said, sorry, that is an optus line, they won't allow us access to that line to do the 'pair gain', they don't do it either by the way. So now, I'm stuck here with shitty dial-up after haveing broadband for the last 2 years because these phone company's are all A***oles. THANKS a bloody lot!
If anyone has any suggestions about what I can do to try and get broadband I am open to offers......Wireless looks WAY too dear BTW. Sean :(

What about the NextG Network they have wireless at reasonable cost.

If I am reading your message right, doesn't it mean that you just have to transfer your normal telephone service from Optus to Telstra for the line to become a Telstra line and they then can do the required work?

Optus just leases Telstra lines most of the time which is no different to your leasing a house insofar as as long as you are still within the lease period, the landlord has no right to come and go as they wish into your house. Likewise I guess with Optus/Telstra - if Optus is leasing the line to sell you a telephone service, Telstra cannot fiddle with it.

Most broadband uses the ADSL technology which piggybacks on your normal telephone line. The exceptions to this are Cable and Wireless broadband but it sounds like you are seeking ADSL.

You would imagine that to be true but where we are the cables for the phones were pretty castus and funnily enough the people before had cable telly so we just got cable for the idiotnet instead :D
Sorry Sean, just realised your in Ballina. They still have sat. dishes for pay TV and the such don't they?

Charlie is correct. Just tell Telstra you want to switch all phone lines to them, and make them your preferred carrier for normal phone calls. Then they can connect the pair gains. Takes about 2 weeks to switch over.

Coped the same with optus.
We had optus cable for five years, then we built a new house 250m from where we were living. Optus guaranteed cable or adsl, of which they couldnt due to pargain lines(in a new estate), so we closed every optus account we had(about 5). >:(
We are on Telstra ISDN at the moment until cable or asdl comes through, which is better than dial up by a long shot.
