Have this new fancy computer for around 4mths, does everything but type, well it has now developed this glich.
i installed nortons, the full kit and kadoddle and since installing this anti everything program, when i runs a full system scan it gets half way
through and decided to shut down, even to the point of turning the power off.
So anyone have any ideas wether its the nortons or the computer.

I dont know if it will fix it but try disabling windows XP's own security function as I know they do clash other than that, nfi :) :)

Can't say i'm a fan of anything Norton. I've seen it do similar things on some of the computers at my work.
The Norton software approach seems to be all about putting banners and popups all over your pc to give a sense of security (and also a general slowdown).
I think a better and cheaper alternative is to run the following software:
AVG Antivirus Free Edition - this provides email scanning and system scanning for viruses
http://free.grisoft.com
Spybot - Search and Destroy - this is a spyware scanner.
http://www.safer-networking.org/
Other good tips are to use either Firefox Web browser or IE7, keep your system up to date with windows security updates, And to run the both virus scans and spyware scans often.
Hope this helps,

I agree with oddbudman norton internet security suite isn't necesarily the best option - it is very memory intensive and slow to load etc. The anti virus product is however excellent.
Definitely make sure you have no other firewalls running and try again - if that doesn't work get in touch with symantec tech support.
Other good freeware is the firewall from kerio and spyware checker from adaware se.

I agree, get rid of Nortons and install AVG, great software.

Norton is the biggest piece of crap antivirus software available, people just buy because they have heard the name before or because everytime on TV when they talk about virus thet always talk to some shirt from symantec.
My preference is NOD32 for antivrus and Kaspersky for firewall.
Becareful Norton users cause when it stuffs up, it is big time.
Symantec has autofix tools on their website and also have complete uninstall and cleanup tools for such situations.
I am a computer technician and totally advise against anything Norton.

AVG seems pretty good. Have used it for a few years now without a drama but it looks like the free version is stopping early next year. Mozilla seems to be a safer browseer than internet explorer. Don't know whhether it is inherently safer or less likely to have problems as less people use it therefore less value for the hackers when they develop a hack

Wouldn't bother with Nortons.
But since you have it you could try starting your computer in Safe Mode and then run Nortons. May need to turn off XP security while running Nortons.

norton flogs so much memory space it is unbeilavable...I got rid of it years back..mind you..getting rid of it is no easy task either but it can be done. I bought PC-cillin...works a treat..anti-virus, firewall, spyware, personal info...all covered and protected...not all that expensive either. I would avoid the free dowload type programmes...never know when they decide not ot upgrade..I get about 4 upgrades a day with PC cillin and not had a single problem since using it.

Okay here is your problem, Norton internet security is a big load of puss. remove it, sell your cd and license key on ebay, buy some lures with the proceeds and downlaod AVG immediately (antivirus) and lavasoft ad-aware free edition (spyware, adware remover);
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
Finally, smile knowing you paid nothing for great internet security and norton isn't infecting and slowing your puta down.

Looks like i brought a $100 + bucks worth of trouble then, ok
First off how do i start the computer in safe mode and how do i turn of xp security??
Will try that first, then go into symatec and see if they have a cure.
If all that fails looks like the rubbish bin for it.

I agree about Nortons being a resources hog. At the very least turn off everything besides the anti-virus.
By the sounds of it I'd be willing to bet that the problem is a confilct between nortons scanning engine and some system file or driver (being scanned).
You'd get a rough idea by noting which directory was being scanned.
As for me, I run AVG free for antivirus on the desktop
Windows firewall on the desktop (as a backup I have a hardware firewall as well)
IF you run your own mail server - check out.
Clam Antivirus (freeware) on my mail server. - Has a great success rate, but as with any anti-virus suite should be run in tandem with at least one other product
http://www.clamav.net
ASSP antispam on the mail server - This would have to be the single greatest piece of freeware I've ever used.
I use it both at home and work with >98% accuracy and success rate on both spam and phishing scams.

To access safemode restart the computer and keep tapping F8 as soon as it starts to come to life - it will then give you the option of starting in safe mode.
You can access XP security via the control panel click start then look for control panel.
Good luck with it.
You may also want to take a look at Ray Shaw's website www.rayshaw.com.au (he writes the computer column in the QLD courier mail) - it has lots of articles about PC security and what programs he recommends which include AVG for a free anti-virus product, kerio personal firewall, spybot search and destroy and adaware se. Its a good place to look for information.

Be careful when uninstalling Norton...............it seems to take other (associated) files with it when it goes. I'm far from knowledgeable with computers but I had nothing but trouble when I had Nortons a few years back. When I uninstalled it, I had to re-install some other progs that refused to work after Norton was gone. Had similar trouble after uninstalling Kodak software that played havoc with the speed of my computer. Other folk I know had the same trouble and the general consensus of folk that I have spoken to is that Kodak and Norton software is incompatible with many "everyday' programmes that you may have on your computer and causes them to fault after you uninstall Kodak and Norton.

Norton will also leave some files behind...it cannot be completely deleted using uninstall...you have to look for them and delete them individually. I must say Norton did me one favour..convinced the other half we needed new computers..they were getting slow..only 1G RAM...was cos I was using Autocad and Norton..both memory hungry programmes..convinced her we need new computers with 2G RAM..nice and fast now without Norton on them.
