Possibly the best place on the east coast to camp & fish.
Hinchinbrook Island is located approx half way between Cairns & Townsville at Cardwell. It is about a 40 minute run from the ramp to the camp grounds in most tinnies (unless you load them like I did last weekend). Facilities at the camp ground we frequent (Macushla) are great and include a gas BBQ (free), sheltered tables & stools, & a long drop ( bush dunny). There is also a rain water tank.
We have visited this paradise many times with our club and have found it easily accessible by any size or style of boat from 385 explorers to 515 trailcrafts.
Camping permits are requirered and can be obtained from Cardwell national parks office or on line.
Our trip last weekend supplied a good mix of fish including estuary cod, mangrove jack, barra, trevally, salmon & grunter.
The fish numbers were down on what we would normally expect but so was the water temperature due to the large amount of rain in the week prior to our trip (and no doubt the fresh water didnt help).
I would recomend this venue to anyone fishing the FNQ area, or planning to. It is very family friendly with our youngest camper being only 3 years & our oldest pushing 50.
If anyone is planning a trip north & would like further infomation drop me a line and I will help if I can.
