Tents.

G'day all - looking for info / advice on tents - ie what to look for/ what to stay away from.

Would like one for 2 adults/2 kids for predominantly weekend trips but also the odd stint for a week or two when we spread our wings a bit.

i prefer dome tents. We've got a High Peak brand dome & have had it for around 8 - 10 years & its just starting to approach its useby date.

We use a tent only for sleeping in & a tarped area for all the living. A good brand dome tent is indestructible in shocking weather & pretty easy to erect.

G'day Derek - The great Outdoors shop near the "Warehouse" at Strathpine has some beautys (and excellent advice), and Campmart has some Sportivas (and Colemans), but I'm also looking at the second hand market, but I'll spend up to $500 if need be.

I have a COI safari style canvas tent with a centre pole and the optional side pole set up. It can be erected in half the time of a dome tent. The only issue is that it packs up into a large square (1m x 1m). Southern cross and the greatoutdoors people also make them. They will outlast any other tent if cared for correctly.

Many many years since I bought the Greatoutdoors Taj Mahal but back then the things I were told to look for were double stitching, better re-inforcement of corners and eyelets, waterproof floor to come well up the side & strong guage poles. Also that the sides were high enough so you could stand up. Back then these were the main areas where the cheaper manufacturers saved their money. This things might all be standard now. Not talking dome tents here of course.

My thoughts exactly - the Taj Mahal was exactly the one I was looking at, although there is a slightly smaller one which has a tub floor and mossie screens in the awning, whereas the bigger one only has a roll out floor and no screens in the awning. I t has waterproofed stitching, YKK zippers and a high watershed. For an extra -$100 more than the sportive it seems to be a better buy I think.........will check out old mates second hand one though.....

thanks guys - I ended up buying a 2 room sportiva headlander 6+6 for $420 from campmart.
Its the new model which replaces the headlander 6 and 8, and is roughly in between the two sizes.

Ifanyones interested they have a headlander 6 demo (last one) for $320 with a 8 inch rip in the floor from the salesbloke in the store tripping over on the way in. I offered $250 but nogo. They said they'd repair the rip.....but the new model looks better......

just need some bedding and we're off!

Our family have two sportiva tents, Highlander six and the next size up. Both were tested (without choice) in winds to 80+kph. Ours survived, many others didn't. That tells me most of what I need to know. Sir Noelus.
