How far out of Brisbane is it Phill? i was going to cough up the $90 for a barge trip to Straddie for the day on Sunday but this sounds like a better way to get myself used to offroad.

Thats an expensive day for getting used to offroad. Barge fare then beach permits...
Alternative options are Bribie - Only need a beach Permit (Available from the Bongaree Caravan Park. Have the beach as well as the tracks through the middle of the island.
North Shore Noosa - No permits needed. Easy beach driving. Take the beach to Rainbow and the freshwater track back.
