I'm hoping to take the kids camping for a few nights to Cape Palmerston, south of Mackay. I'm interested to know if anyone has been there recently or at all and any comments you might have on the road in, camping sites, good and bad points.
If the weather is good we should be taking a 4m tinny on trailer with us so wondering if it's suitable access and launching there somewhere.
From what I've read there's three campsites, so considering there may be 2 adults and 4 kids in the party, any suggestions for a preferred site would be very much appreciated.
If the trip goes ahead will post some pics for your interest.

Thanks, Paul.

hi paul, we were going there last year, but then changed our mind and stayed at greenhill instead. talked to a local there and he said it wasnt really worth the drive up there because there are pro's, sandflies and you must carry water as there is nothing there. also that you should be wary of tides so as to travel on beach at low tide only. but i say if your keen then do it because we all know that if theres pro's there, then theres muddies there for sure. ;)
good luck

hey paul, by the way mate, another spot that i recommend is st helens which is 50 kms north of mackay, turn off at calen. camp spot is council run campground, nice grass, and close to beach, toilets but no showers. we caught good crabs in the creek there and a heap of whiting. also can fish the close islands ( check if they are still blue zone).

cheers wazza, thanks for that. I reckon we'll still plug on to Cape Palmerston. I'm always up for a bit of exploring. Will keep St Helens in the back oof my mind for future trips though.
