Hello Everybody,
I took my son to Sth Straddie to camp overnight at Tipplers on Friday night.
I thought I would try some techniques I learned from this site.
Before I left home I chopped up some potatoes carrots and onions and put them into a pseudo camp oven that I bought from a cheap shop.
I also took a frying pan for the sausages and any fish that we might have caught while we were out.
We got the fire going well and I put my fake camp oven with the veges in it on the coals. Next thing I knew my 11 year old son deciced to get the fire going and was putting twigs and dry leave and what ever he found onto the fire. By the time I realised there was a huge blaze over my vegie pot.
Anyway............we cooked the sausages as we were not successfull at fishing. When I took the lid off the vegies, I had a big suprise.
They turned out beautiful. I thougt we would be eating burnt offering for tea. The potatoes had crunchy burnt bits around the edges but this just made them tast better.
I am adding some herbs and maybe garlic next time to add to the charcoal flavor.
All the best,
saphire.

p.s. If those nice boys who helped us out by pushing our boat back into the water are reading this site. Thank you so much. We really appreciated your help. :)

Almost anything tastes good when you cook it over a fire. I think with veges in the camp oven you are better off doing what you did and giving it a bit of heat or they sort of steam rather than roast. Coals are much hotter than a normal fire.
Camp cooking is good stuff, [smiley=laola.gif]

Hi Saphire

Great stuff.

Next time also take a piece of lamb. You can buy lamb rounds at Woolworths. A lamb round is the top part of the leg without the bone and they are an ideal size for 2 people. Rub the lamb and vegies with oil, place the lamb in the middle of the camp oven with the vegies around it. Sprinkle it all with dried rosemary. Pop the top on the oven and cook it. Yummmmmmmm.

Great observation Horse :)Didn't think of it that way.
Derek, you can bet that next time we go away lamb will be on the menu just as you suggested.
Oh yes, along with the fish we will catch as well.

Saphire,
Sounds like a good time. Glad to hear there was some boys around to help you. We got beached on south stradbroke earlier this year (tide went long way out while we were asleep) and had a heel of a time getting it back in the water. Didn't help that there were about 10 surfies just standing there laughing at us. Not a happy camper that morning, not a happy camper at all >:( >:( >:(
Cheers Fritzy

Hi Fritzy,
I hate it when people do that.
That is exactly what happened to us. It was a really low tide. We were just lucky this boatload of great blokes saw that we could use there help and came and lent a hand.
This saved us so much distress.
Im not a hippy but I believe in Karma. You do something nice for someone and someone will do something nice for you.
The best thing is to ignore people like those surfies, it is only their ignorance that causes them to be like that.
Cheers to you,
saphire.
