Well I was going to put up a post in fishing reports :-X :-[ then I thought about fresh water chat :-? but since the fishing was very lean and the only real fresh water activities was swimming and having time trials in the boat I thought I would put up a post here.
We left last Friday morning (8am), good run out but bloody hot, got to Condamine hotel about 12:30pm for throat cleaner, flies flies flies, never seen it this bad. >:( Had a couple of coldies and out to the property. Said g’day to the property owners (L&L) great people, inhaled a few more flies, on our way to the river.
Been fairly exited that we are here, the river level doesn’t sink in straight away ::), set camp and off to get some crays from secrete spot (never failed in 20yrs) ……dry… :( :'(….found another dam, set pots. Back to camp and launch boat, set up sounder and start to survey for structure and depth…. :-/. average depth in water hole .9m….. :-?
So things are looking rather sad on the fishing side, the NW wind is killing us, the flies are like a biblical wrath, the bait is scarce as is the wild life cause every thing is scorched and nothing wants to move. :P
Over the next few days we tried a bit of everything on the fishing front, hard and soft lures, crays, meat, bobbing, set lines…only to produce a few average catties, no sign of a cod or a yellowbelly :'(, as the water temp was way up, thought that might stir them up, but finding only two good holes with a show of fish still produced very little.
Any way it was a good time by all, no injuries to people, equipment or stock ;). Had a good last night with the Owner and his cousin (as they say, we don’t get a lot of visitors out here) with a few steaks and a lot of rumbos ;D ;D. Departed earlier than normal on Monday and were we glad to see the end of those flies, still swishing my face and squinting my eyes.
Hopefully the rains that are predicted will stir the old joint up again and will try again next year, few pics to follow.
Cheers,
Chong
PS: Derek,
made a lamb chop stew in the camp oven that was bloody beautiful ;), love the old camp oven on the coals in the bush, and always tastes better. :P
