View Full Version : Oztrail v Coleman
Hey guys, am getting a tent and am interested in your opinons on these two options
- Oztrail 4V plus
- Coleman Lakeside 4
Both are similar prices, I was going to get the oztrail because it was slightly cheaper, but when I went to BCF, they had the normal Oztrail 4V on display and it only got 2.5/10 for flooring in there booklet for all tents that they have in shop, so that has put me off a little. One thing I've noticed about the coleman is that the vestibule doesn't seem to be inclosed at the floor ?? Whereas the 4V plus is?
From the searching I've done here general consensus, seems to be that Coleman is of a better quality, but maybe the 4V plus is a step up from the 4V, just looking for some opinions guys, or for any other tents around this price range. I don't anticipate going camping much, which is why I've settled around this price range, cheers.

Mate why don't you choose the same design in the BCF tent. You'll find they have copied the oztrail tents and improved the quality. Such as floor, fly, poles etc. I brought a BCF brand tent and hope to use it this Easter period. I've had it up at home during some very wet nights, and so far all looks good. Roddy
Will have another look at them, only looked at them briefly, but they appear to be more expensive then the coleman ones, but I'll keep them in mind, cheers.

For the price point i think the oztrail tent is the better from the research i done when buying my new tent compaired to the coleman and BCF tent's that is a copy of the oztrail the BCF tents have an older version of the oztrail fly not the new dry tek fly they have this season and the oztrail duraplus poles are far better than the ones in the BCF tents and the floor may be a heavier denier (denier is measured by the weight of a meterial over 9000 yrds) but it is a larger weave which makes the floor weaker but thats just my opinion.

Just be careful with the Oztrail 4V...
I have the 4V+ and on a recent trip, i put the pole together and obviously missed a buckle in one of the poles where the metal sleeve goes on. Anyway its broken the pole at the point and has then pierced the fly.
BCF refuse to accept it back under warranty, and won't even send it back to Oztrail for me, it has to be done by me.

So if you did not put it together properly, why would it be a warranty repair?

We have the Coleman Lakeside 6, good tent, also if someone like me can put it up it has to be a good tent;D When i was looking around they all ended up looking the same, i reckon you wont go wrong with any the tents mentioned. Also Id go for a 6 person for the extra room even if a couple ;D also they are far easier to sprawl in or fall into late at night after too many beers...

Here is a thread I posted a while ago about the same tent.
http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php?t=52573
I have used the tent several times now and have had no drama with poles, collapses or anything, even the Easter winds aand rain at South Straddie.
I did my homework and decided on this one as it has a fully screened in front room where you can open it right up during the day and be out of harms way to flys, mozzies and the sun and then close it at night time and sleep more people.
The other tent I was comparing it to only had a fly mesh section in the open end with like a straight through breeze way...

It wasn't an issue with putting it up properly, it was the fact that there was a weak point in the pole that i'd missed. When i pulled the tent back down again, i could see there was a defect in the pole at that point.
BCF didn't want to know about it, but the tear was only fairly small, i substituted in a section of pole from another tent and its fine now. The hole was repaired and its about to do a week on Moreton Island.

Ok, sorry. I did not realise there was a weak spot, I will take my foot out now:-[

Take a look at tentworld. When i bought my oztrail sportiva bcf was more expensive by 70 bucks. If they have some 2006 models left they be much cheaper than the 2007 models.
