I would most likely remove the leg and the thermostat and run the hose back through the thermostat housing and galleries back down to where the water pump was.

Whatever you do, make sure you clean it out, especially the cooling to the ECU, without water you will cook it in no time, are you sure there is sand in the motor? Just getting bogged doesn’t always fill the motor with sand.

Are you sure the temp sensor is reading correctly?
Common failure point and often sends engines into limp mode.
How hot is the tell tale when it gets hot and sets off alarms?
A bottle to catch some hot tell tale water and a thermometer will give you an accurate reading on the water.
If the tell tale water is under about 90 degrees I think you might have a sensor problem.....over 90 degrees you likely do have a sand blockage of a port in the powerhead.
Normal temp ranges are up to 90 degrees.
If you have a thermal imaging gun you can take a reading right beside the temp sensor when the alarms go off.....it should be under 90 degrees.
As above, if you do believe you have filled the gallery with sand, drop the leg and remove the thermostat and black flush the powerhead with the garden hose in the thermostat housing.
The critical places in the powerhead for blockages are next to the exhaust manifold....there are small ports there that can block and give hot spots in the cylinder walls destroying pistons then cylinders.
Check the temps....if above 90c you have an issue with the engine, below 90c you have an issue with the temp sensor.

The tell tale water temperature is no test of motor cooling, most do not circulate through the block before coming out. If you replace the water pump, do the complete kit with genuine parts, not just a cheap after market impeller.
