View Full Version : Trailer troubles

Some months after having purchased my 2nd hand boat and trailer, was told that the trailer was the wrong one for the boat.

"Should be roller not skid"
"Should be longer as its not supporting the transom."

Kept trucking for another year or so but noticing now its a bit cactus with rust dropping out underneath though still sounds solid. Have pulled it out from under boat to have a closer look, Actually can see some gouge marks on the hull guessing from the bare timber skid what lost its teflon strip.

Anyway just wondering should i be worried about the boat overhang and should i be adding rollers, as now that the boats on tyres i can work on trailer and convert to roller system though not sure about stretching it the 400mm or so .Photo shows end of trailer to transom =400mm roughly. The pod sticks out about another 300mm beyond that .

Boats a Fraser Formula 626 1989 half cabin with a 175. (if anyone knows the weight of these would be much appreciated)

Cheers

In my opinion the amount of hull + pod overhang from end of trailer to to much. Trailer needs to come back to almost the end of hull.

As for rust and skid. Well I’m a firm believer of rollers for glass, some will disagree, but that’s my belief. Rust, well possibly on its way out. See if it’s salvageable and if so, fix it and sell it. Put that money towards a new more suitable trailer. Good luck.

PS: while doing this fix up all the marks/chips/gouges underneath

A good way to find out the weight is for you to put it on a weigh bridge.

You need to have Trailer with boat/motor on scales, car off scales, and it is slightly better to have trailer unhooked from car.

Most weigh bridges are ok with this if they are not busy.

If you do not unhook from car then add 5 to 10% as an estimate of what the car tow ball is carrying, or put the jockey wheel on some bathroom scales.

A 3.5-4 meter tinny may be ok with a rusty trailer but a 626 hull there is no place for rust on that trailer especially if the rust is falling on the ground that is a great concern, if u can cut out the rust and weld in a new sections that would help i wouldnt weld plates over gaping rust holes just to salvage the trailer

A 2 set of 6 roller frame would work for your over hang one 6 roller set per side they flop down when the boats off so they should have enough overhang to cover your hull, the 4 roller sets are much smaller

Check swiftco trailers for the 6 roller set up's

https://www.swiftcotrailers.com.au/Wobble-Roller-KitsParts-X1204.html i have seen bigger 6 roller frames online

thanks everyone

Based on research and your comments have had a lot to consider. I think its potentially a safety concern any way you slice it, so am heading out and purchasing a decent 2400kg used trailer that is in good nick. Piece of mind and all that. I will keep this one registered and sell it off as its probably fine for a 5m tinnie even with the rust.

thanks everyone for your thoughts., i recon have dodged a potential bullet stuffing around with it

cheers

Can you move the winch post forward to move the boat up further on the trailer. You will need to watch the tongue weight but you maybe able to move it forward enough. Does it tow like a pig? Have you got a pic of the trailer in full? Bunks are fine for big glass boats, just keep them in good condition and lined.

update

hey folks,

With all the safety concerns etc mentioned above have gone out and purchased a fairly decent 2017 dunbier rollered trailer at the correct length and with a healthy 2450kg rating, Has a decent electric hydraulic setup just need the vehicle controller. Should get us up and down the Qld coastline in safety for a while. Fyi, if your buying an unregistered trailer rated over a certain amount it will need a heavy vehicle inspection, this is where they measure it all up with a tape and do some other mysterious things and then your all good. Its free if you go to Pineapple St Zillmere Transport. So thats if its unregistered which this was. There main concern being modifications. Anyway all good now. The patrol and trailer all up weigh in at 3300kg. will be interesting to see what that boat adds which we are guestimating at around 1000kg maybe a bit more, will post it when we go over the scales.
Thanks all for your thoughts and suggestions - much appreciated. Am going to clean up the skid trailer and put up for sale in coming weeks /.months / year

Greg P - post was all the way forward we could get, the full length of the trailer being 5.8m tip to toe that left about a meter to the prop hanging in air.

Who ever built that old trailer and thought it was suitable for your boat should be hung by the nuts

So the big question now, silver or black colour respray for the skid trailer
Daughter recons silver looks better, i was going for the black but either way works for me, plan is to wire wheel the loose stuff then Rustoleum spray / primer / rust converter in whatever colour . Noticed the mechanical brakes are a bit how you goin so have to sort that as well.

If the rust is bad where u can put your fingers right through holes be honest with the sale sell it as is untouched and note it on the receipt

You would hate to be the buyer to have the trailer fail in 2 weeks time thinking he got a really solid trailer deal

If the trailer is at its end of life sell it for parts don't let abloke like u and i put his pride and joy on it unknowingly
