View Full Version : Early season prawns
I went out yesterday at 5am to deliver a net at Macleay island.Once there my intentions were to scout around for prawns. Just like last year the prawns have started early. I tried 6 or 7 spots before finally locating a huge school of them. I got my bucket in 30 minutes.
There are squillions of jellyfish about. The Jellyfish made it difficult, as pulling 2 or 3 out of your net pocket each time can be a drag.
By late yesterday there 20 boats into them and everyone reported getting as bucketful Can't go out today as I am working but that's alright still got quite few yummy prawns to eat before I go again. They are a mixture of large and mediums.
Heres a couple of photos-

Great size for this early. Very nice. Guess all the yellow raincoats wont be too far away then.

Nice work Pero. I had a look in the pine on Sunday for a total of 4 prawns and 500 jellyfish.
One cast the top pocket was that full i couldn't lift the net into the boat.

Getting the itch to go look for myself, even gathered up some leaves in the back yard practicing. Over the shoulder is proving easier to cast the bigger net, but will have to wear a raincoat for the blue blubber, they give me a rash!:-?;D

Blue blubbers bad, Scalem.I
did reasonably well prawning at Russell island yesterday. Will post pics soon
. I worked the hole for 3 hours. I didn't leave much behind. I was getting 90% brown tigers. They were hard work. I was jigging them hard and still only manage to get half of them hit the top pocket.
I had the wind and current in opposite directions. That helped as the net was almost on a 45 degree incline whilst I worked the critters up the stairs. And... got 2 snapper in the net, with consecutive throws. They appeared straight after the tide turned to incoming. Good feed!

Had a good day out with Pero this morning. I was using my 4mm chain net, and managed to catch a few.

I'm fairly new to this but what was that hanging over the side technique ?? Some sort of prawn whispering ??
That was a photo opportunity, Ben.
