Hey everyone..
Not so much a report cause was pretty much a donut apart from a 35cm grinner.
I went with my dad on his 22ft centre console boat, he took my hobie kayak along and him and 3 others fished at the rous channel for
whiting and dropped me off.
I tried for the whiting but most my gear was for bigger fish so I headed for harry atkinson reef.. gee it was a far distance, maybe 8km.
Took 2 hours to peddle (hobie peddle fishing kayak) I thought I would try around the 5m mark cause my fish finder was indicating a rocky bottom.
It was just maybe 50-100m away from all the boats anchored at the reef. I was using a 5" paddle tail z-man pink plastic and a 3/8 jighead, not sure on hook size
but I know i've used the same rig to catch a 57cm snapper without it chewing up the plastic.
I got 2 huge bites and from the bites it felt like a snapper but now I'm unsure.. First I was using 10lb braid with 15lb leader and when i pulled up the plastic was wrecked..
The whole tail was gone and was huge bite marks in the rest of the plastic plus the 15lb leader was sliced. So I put on 40lb leader with the same kind of plastic.
Bang again.. same kind of huge bites, pull it up and again the tail gone and big bites on the rest of the plastic and not only that.. the 40lb leader and bite marks all down it..
So it was either a big snapper or a pelagic of some kind maybe a spottie.. if only I had a wire on and a bigger hook size :(
I then got a call from my dad they were coming to pick me up cause they finished whiting fishing..
It was pretty good tho, he made me a winch arm that attaches to his boat so that I just hope into the boat and attach a hook to the kayak..
And we just winch it up and store it down the side of the boat.
If any of you were out at the reef around 12-2pm you would of seen me.. cause I was the only kayak there hahaha.
Here is a pic of the plastic.
