Had a lot of feedback from members saying that they do not like the fact their name is displayed. Especially if they disagree with something as they would like to like, thank or disagree without anyone knowing. This also gives a better rating of the post, otherwise you only see likes or thanks and only a rare disagree. As this is a forum and not fakebook posts can be viewed and rated differently.

28-01-2014, 06:40 PM

Jarrah Jack
28-01-2014, 07:59 PM
First time I've ever had a disagree from Steve as well. It must mean that he doesn't think it worked well for many years????

I've mentioned the like system on here to two other forums and both tried it out but couldn't match the exact system so they dropped it. I always thought that the system used on here encouraged a helpful atmosphere now I won't bother with it and would prefer to see it scrapped altogether.

Another sign of a good forum losing its way, to me.

snapperbasher
28-01-2014, 08:03 PM
Yep I've had 3 or 4 from him in the last 10 mins.......first ones ever....I think the old system was great it gives a bit of insight into other members views or funny enough likes and dislikes.....completely useless as it is currently.....I wont be using it.

Was done as as an example to demonstrate it is not completely anonymous, as you thought. Glad you could see the example. Hence why it is the first ones I have clicked disagree. Did it to a couple of others as well so they can see how it works.

snapperbasher
28-01-2014, 08:12 PM
You said yourself here in your first post that you changed it because other members said they would like to like/thank or disagree without anyone knowing....... so seeing as though it isn't anonymous as you made highlighted in your example above you have not changed it to suit these members requests really? I don't understand?

If you look at your notifications you will see it links to the actual post, not just the thread. So if it is important for you to see which post of the thread someone liked/thanked/disagreed to you can still see it.

I disagree Steve. If I click on the post link in the notification it only takes me to the top of the page that the person clicked on not the individual post. It is important to me to know exactly which post otherwise it really is a complete waste of anybodies time rating a post....if no one else can see who has rated it and you cant tell who rated which post??? why even have that function??

Just checked it and it works fine. When it first goes to the page it shows the top of the page because the post it is linked to has not loaded yet, just a part of the page. Once the entire page loads it will go to the actual post.

I ahve only checked it in Firefox at the moment so will check it in a few other browsers

Steve, there have been a few changes on Ausfish over the last three months and in my opinion none have been for the betterment of the site

1. The lifetime bans imposed on core members and the continued editing/deletion of threads and banning of members has led to the widespread disenfranchisement of a lot of long term contributors

2. The latest upgrade that has made internet explorer almost unusable has impacted on many members. IE is used extensively by the less IT savvy sections of the community. I personally hate having to switch to Chrome to post anything

3. Encouraging keyboard hero's to hide behind anonymity with their likes and dislikes. Either boot it completely or leave it he way it was

I couldn't agree more. In fact, I enjoy knowing who likes/thanks/dislikes my posts. These anonymous ratings are useless. Meaningless. Why even bother having them?

And yes, I can go elsewhere, and yes, it's a business yada, yada, yada. I know all that. But while this site is owned by someone, that isn't all it is. For some people, (me among them), this is a gateway to possible community.

Obviously you can't please everyone. But what happens when you can't please anyone except yourself?

As I have said before, it is too difficult these days to support IE. It is a problem across websites around the world. It is fast becoming the least used browser. See some of the posts by other IT guys on this site and many others. No need to switch browser to post, just use that browser all the time,

They do not hide behind their keyboard. As demonstrated before, and you would have seen from the thanks and likes you have received for your post, the member that the thank/like/disagree is made on will see that they have clicked. So if their is a serial pest/keyboard hero they will be seen.

Where do you come up with this stuff. Some of 400k is due to robots registering and trying to spam the site. One of the reasons many years ago to place a 2 cent per day subscription on the site, other wise robots and spammers would have destroyed the site many years ago. If you were around in those days you would have seen the trouble that we were having with porn being posted, etc. I do clean up some of the robot registrations from time to time but it is a very hard and tedious process as there is not a common email address, ip address or anything used. Nothing to do with tax either, would not matter if there were 10000 members or 10000000 members. You don't get taxed on the number of customers you have, you get taxed on your income from your customers. People that are interested in advertising do not look at the number of members, they look at the number of people viewing and posting in a section. I have been operating this site now for 20 years and never once have I been interested in selling it, can not see that changing, but who knows what the next 20 years hold.

Hope that clears up some misconceptions for you and anyone else that comes up with this stuff.

Posted late at night after a few sherberts and moved to here but interesting arguments. Maybe if the terminology had been changed from Dislike to Disagree there wouldn't have been the same angst, I know that I can view in my profile who Thanked, Liked or Disliked my thread. If it has been a thorn in somebodies side then why not remove the numbers altogether but leave details that the thread has been emoticonned, after all the person who has been emoticonned will still get a notification, and it may even reduce the number of people who automatically hit a button without adding an argument to support their decision and make them stop and think a bit more about it.
Has Ausfish become a site for people to randomly hit emoticons, here is a better improvement to the site, why isn't Ausfish in the dictionary as it always comes up as not a valid word, let's get that one fixed.
