Penn Prevail

Greetings all !

Recently bought a Penn Prevail 11 ft spin, from MO, online.

Rod looks good, apart from the joint. There are 2cm of the lower blank showing, when the 2 rod halves are put together. Is this OK? I havn't seen this before, in any other graphite rod. It's almost like the rod has been put together from two, separate, rods.

I have the same rod. Same thing. Spent a month on Fraser Catching tailor with it and no problems. Every Penn prevail I have seen is the same. Not sure why it is that way, but they still appear to work?

Yeah some of the newer rods have the same design on the joint. Good feeling rod too!

Have either of you had to dead lift any fish? If so, what was the biggest?

Bought the Prevail because it looks a bit stronger than my 11ft Big Game Surf. Have lifted up to 3.5kg with the Big Game.

Hi Mate,
I have a Penn Prevail probably the same rod but they come out in different classes. Mine is the 10 foot and rated 10-15kg and as you probably know I use it off the rocks for jewfish.
Great casting action and it is a fast taper so it has heaps of feel.
Mine has the exposed join as well but it poses no problems apart from when I cast a lot or every time I get a reasonable fish it needs to be pulled together to tighten it up at the join as I have cast it out a couple of times when it has become detached.
3-4kg deadlift would be its max but sooner or later you will end up with a 3 piece rod if you keep lifting that weight especially if you high stick the rod with a fish on, which most people do without realising in the heat of the moment..

Thanks for that Steve. The biggest lifted so far is a 4.4kg jew on a cut down 12ft Schneiderglas beach rod. Some of the places that we fish there is no option other than to carry a 4 piece gaff a long way across the rocks.

Yeah we always take a 12 foot 2 piece gaff with us and even use another 4ft joiner to lengthen it even more..
The lighter tackle we use is just to get the fish back to the rocks then let the gaff do its job unless we are releasing the fish..

Comes in handy though because we rescued a bodyboarder off the wall in very rough conditions there one day. He was lodged in the rocks and we used the pointy end of the gaff to haul him up....No we didnt gaff him.He grabbed the loop in the hook:)

a bit of wet and dry sandpaper to thin down the inserted bit works to fix it. just keep checking the fit so you don't sand it down to much.

Ha first time back on Ausfish for nearly 12 months...glad to see it hasnt changed much...gives me the heebie jeebies thinkin bout lifting fish with those graphite rods....Im a tad clumbsy with gear n reakon ive got way to many scratched in my graphite rods to be thinking about lifting a 3kg fish...i'll play it safe with a ft5120 ;-)

Penn Big game Surfs have both gone 3 years. Biggest fish 3.6kg trevally, with a VERY big lift.

Prevail lifted a 72cm Jew, 2,5m, the other week. No probs. Still examining the gaff option.

Normaly when joints are exposed there made like that for wear over time, as the ferral wears it seats lower on the bottom section.
