A Swallowtail Dart in the Broadwater!

Hi all,

Another land based trip to the Broadwater again had Max producing a feed of whiting. This time mixed in with the whiting was a few bream and surprise, surprise a swallowtail dart of 37 cm. Yes a decent dart well and truly in the Broadwater. The bloke who wrote in his PhD thesis that dart do not enter estuary waters such as the Southport Broadwater must be looking pretty silly now. That’s the beauty of fishing; you never know what is going to turn up where!

As is so often the case, the key to catching off the shore is to get the sinker size right and experiment with it until something works. I had both surf worms and Cribb Island worms with the surf worms this time out fishing there more illustrious counterparts.

It is a real mixed bag in the broadwater. Back in 98 when I worked at the gold coast hospital I was out fishing for tailor between wave break and crab island I happened upon a school of 50cm queenfish. Best hour fishing of my life!!! Unfortunately it was before camera phones so no pics. The aerial display from these speedsters was awesome. It would be great to get amongst the big metre plus versions up north.

We have caught dart in Moreton Bay on small hardbody lures on a regular basis for years now so they are not confined to surf beaches...

yep. caught a dart a few years back just off wello point.

I had fun with a school of them around the wrecks at Tangas. They were quite visible in the water and I called them for Queenies They were eating small plastics

Yes I remember attending a presentation at the Uni by that same bloke and topic. Late 90's, maybe 97 or 98 ?
Was out there with a few work colleagues who knew a bit about catching and managing fish.

Love the way your son winds them in with the rod still in the rod holder, magic.

You can regularly catch swallowtail dart at high tide close to the wash on the rock spurs on Wave Break Isl. You should see them if you go for a snorkel there too.

It would have been about 97/98 as you have suggested Craigie. Hopefully I will have another book to join that one in 2014.
