With the lack of reports currently I thought I better throw this one up to give you guys something to read....

Shot up the river last night for a plastics session after work. Managed to find a school of hungry snaps and got 2 from the first 2 casts and then over the next half hour had a pretty consistent stream of hookups and getting dusted in the structure. I managed to land 3 in total and my deckie got one.

The highlight was the decky getting monstered by what im more than 50% sure was a big barra!!:o It came straight out of the water when hooked then porpoised again with about 2/3 of its body out of the water. It then went deep and back under the boat and straight for a set of pilons and promptly stitched him up!!

When it came out of the water my first thought was a Jewie....It was silver with a black back and I could clearly see the scales.....It happened that quick I couldnt positively ID it as a Barra but it had all the characteristics of one. the more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards a Barra..... Guess we will never know....

Basher, when you say up the river, do you mean the Brisbane river? (I note that your location is Brisbane).

Bloody hell! When I lived i Brisbane northern suburbs, I used to take my boat to the Pin or hook on to the rock wall at Pinkenba, fishing for bream. And meanwhile, just down the road........... (Doh!)

Mate.....the river is an amazing fishery.....takes a little while to suss it out but can produce some awesome fish from time to time.....just have to look back through the fishing reports here to see some examples....

Infact it is the most reliable area I fish...can always get onto something landing them amongst the structure is another story though!!

Thanks snapper, my son caught 2 barra in the logan river 2 years ago in a cast net so they are around and on the lack of reports?, one thing ve noticed is that say 6 years ago there was lots of reports of bay snapper from wello, green and mud and now they are so rare, congrats on your catch, it would have been a bitch rigging up over and over if you were using braid..

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was a Barra but cant say for certain....The image is burnt into my brain of that first jump though....Just wish I got a better look..... It was a big fish.... meter at least....

The Subject of posting fishing reports has been done to death on here so I'm not going to start that again...haha...

I think the fish are still there though just people keeping it quiet....

I got this one at Green a couple of weeks ago...

Nice fish, green can be a hard place to land bigger snaps, I fished there a lot 6 years ago, the drag would scream off then you would feel the squeak squeak of your leader rubbing on a bomby then ping!!!!.

Threadfin salmon maybe. They are known to be in the river. If global warming means barra in the brissy maybe it ain't such a bad thing

Mate I have caught plenty of Thready's in the river and i'm pretty sure it wasnt a Thready.... It was very Silver with large scales.... I have caught some big thready's that are almost silver but almost certain it wasnt one....

Been a few catches of good sized barra over the years in the brissy , the lads at work (port of Brisbane) watched one surface swimming last summer and said it was around the 90cm mark. they are there and I would not doubt your story one bit. nice haul of snapps also , I thought they would have moved on by now , good to see they are still around.

Pretty sure there is a pic of one (Barra) in the latest B&B from Jacobs well caught while trolling for flatties...... if my memory is working.

I have heard of a number of small barra been caught around Jacobs and Logan river over the last 10 years I was told there was a fishery up stream that lost a few due to flooding. Anyone she'd more light on that rumour.

A few turn up every year in SE Queensland.... And every year you here the same stories of fish farm escapees.... To be honest I think they are truly wild fish that venture south... 15 years ago who would of thought of a threadfin fishery here?...they were considered a northern species only.... There is a fairly healthy population of Barra in the Burrum and Mary rivers and also the sandy straights...not far by water to here..

I remember when I was about 10 my uncle took me fishing in tingalpa creek.... We were fishing with livies and I hooked a fish that jumped and had whiskers... I swore then it was a threadfin and everyone I told laughed at me.... Told me it was probably a catfish.... I still think it was a thready to this day...

Wouldn't be the 1st big barra action in the brizzy river.

Top stuff with the snaps. It's good to see the river starting to get a bit more snapper activity. Ever since the floods I've found the snapper fishing a little hard to say the least.

Thanks

A mate hooked up to what he described a metre plus Barra in the Coomera River just this Wednesday gone , I dont have any evidence to back up my story up but all good fisherman never really stretch the truth. Apparrently it took a big live mullet ,he had fought it for a fair while shorebound and was grabbing his leader to pull it in when the leader broke, not all was lost though as the Barra spat the livie back out.
I do believe him.

When you think about it there is nothing to stop them being in SEQ especially in summer....the water temp up the river was a tad over 26 deg the other night.....There is certainly plenty of food for them also....

They may not survive in the middle of Winter though (not sure on their exact temp tolerence?)

There are reports of Barra in the NSW northern rivers from when the first settlers arrived. They do fine in colder water, the issue is if there is a sudden temperature drop. Im sure the bay and rivers manage to hold the temperature well enough to sustain barra.

Do you get squire further up river like at Centenary? Or just catfish and bull sharks?

I was at Jindalee boat ramp on Friday and was speaking to another fellow Ausfisher Getjiggy. He was saying they catch bream and flathead there.

I fished the bremer river at Bundamba when I was a kid and was getting flathead and good sized bream there. That was around 15 years ago.

Cheers
Darren

Nah mate got rid of that a while ago and went to CC 550 explorer then sold that about 6 months ago and downsized to a Seajay Territory 485... Decked it out with humminbird side imaging and a minnkota ipilot link...lot cheaper to run and getting just as many fish really!... Just not as comfortable...haha

Keep the reports coming SB, just don't give away too many of your secret spots haha
The rig you have now is ideal for the river, need a leccy to really fish it properly. My Yalta is just a pain in that territory drifting plastics but smashed them in Matt chews wheelie bin about a year ago. Awesome fun! He since sold it :'(

Yeah you really can't fish the river without an electric... Not properly anyway...

It's great for fishing the islands out the front too... If you hit a patch of fish you can just hit the spot lock and hold on top of them...

Hell of a lot easier than the CC that's for sure!
