Hey guys,

Hooked the airmar b164 1kw thru hull up to the hds and I must say I was disappointed.

I am guessing that it must be settings as I still got an ok-ish read at standstill.

It loses bottom and depth at any speed and it was not what I expected.

Tried play with sensitivity and ping and scroll speeds but didn't help much.

Any ideas on where to look?

Mounting position? and was it a tilted element? if so was it installed within the right tolerences. I have a 600w B-6012 on its way and will let let you know how it reads once installed also hooking it up to a lowrance.

It was previously mounted in the boat when I purchased it.

I also purchased a 600w thru hull but then realised it already had one installed..

It's definitely a tilted element, about a foot from the keel and a foot from the stern.

Has some silicon lumps around it so would that effect water flow?

Definitely will effect the flow across the ducer also check if the arrow on the ducer inside is pointing to the keel, check the tag behind the head unit and make sure you have selected the right ducer in your settings !!

Thanks john. The settings say a 5k and a 10k ducer. I'm assuming that the 10k is the 1kw?

Mustang,

you need to go into to the sonar setup menu, then select the transducer, it should actually say B164, or generic 1kw. transducer.

Ok that's my issue, for some reason it only states b164 with a (5k) or a (10k) behind it. Will keep digging

Mustang,

just checked mine, yours is set correctly, it does have b164 (5k).

I don't have mine connected to my b164, but to a 600w transom mount, reads Ok at speed till you get to about 40 meters of water.

The only difference betweeen the B164 5K and 10K is the water temp sensor in the transducer. If your water temp readings look sensible, then you have it set right. If they are way out of whack, change to the other one.

Ok thank you.

Any other adjustments I should look at?

Will clean up the silicon etc and go from there
