The xxxx 2013 rocky barra bounty was held over the 26-28thof September on the mighty Fitzroy River. Thought I would do a quick write upon how our team “downtime” went.
We set off from the nerimbera boat ramp and the plan was to fish all the rock bars, rock piles and snags from the ramp down to the cutthrough. 6am kicked things off and we started thrashing the water. It took ustill about 10am to find our first barra with team mate Derek nailing his first ever Fitzroy barra on a quick catch soft vibe. Tagged, photo done and over the side he went, quick high five and back too it. We worked hard for the afternoon and only found one more barra.

Day 2 and we stuck to a similar plan. We pulled up on a rockbar down near the cut through and found a reasonable show on the side image. We stayed here for about an hour and pulled 3 barra off it before we moved onto a good looking snag pile.

This particular set of snags has it all but best fishing we found was low tide and the first 2 hours of run in. Derek pulled a barra off it straight up on a small berkley gulp plastic then nailed a thready.I finally got a turn and pulled a thready off it as well. I went for a look with the side image and found a couple of big fish sitting out a bit deeper so we motored back and started letting our plastics sink down deep. Derek was first up and I think the fight lasted about 3 seconds. Full locked up drag and thumb was no match and all Derek could say was WOW!!!!! The bust of was impressive that was for sure. About 10mins later it was my turn but before I could do much I felt the leader already in the timber and PING…. There goes another one. Geez we got owned in that 15mins or so but it was great fun and that’s what keeps us coming back.

We pulled one more barra off the previous rock bar and a blue salmon for Derek up in town before we pulled the boat out.
The final day was only half a day and that was on the Saturday. We pulled up on the same rock bar but this time it was almost high tide. The down scan revealed some likely looking suspects and within 5 casts I was on. It was disappointing when a thready showed its head, normally they are awesome fun but they were becoming a nuisance while trying to find the barra.

We nailed another thready then moved on. We went and checked out some old country up in casurina creek but it was bare so we came back and fished the same couple of spots. We nailed another barra before the threadies moved in again. With only an hour to go we stayed here and had some fun with the king, I think we tagged about 11 and probably dropped just as many if not more.

Double hook-ups were common
It was another great year and we are always picking up new tips and techniques from fellow fishers and watching other people while out on the water. We only tagged 3 barra last year and this year we tagged 9 so we are on the improve which is great. Barra definitely isn’t one of my strong points but we finished mid field out of 70 teams which we were happy about. Thanks to marvin (kev) for some great advice too as it worked a treat. We didn’t find any big ones this year but that is on the ‘to do’ list for next year. For any more info jump on www.rockybarrabounty.com (http://www.rockybarrabounty.com/)that should point you in the right direction. Cheers
