Been a while since I posted an offshore fishing trip so it seemed karma that I did a solo offshore fish on Monday in some epic conditions nearly 12 months to the date of my last solo effort.
Took the V-Sea for a run seeing it has been neglected since purchasing the Reef Runner and due for its 3 year service for a late arvo fish at Wide Caloundra.
Livies were scarce and no bird life or surface action on the way out left me with frozen bait and SP's.
First up I tried an old favourite spot that I lost to a charter boat a few years ago and have not fished it for 2 years and a green pepper neon was dispatched on a 1 1/2 once jig head and a whole squid on a snood rig was lowered feathering it out on the thumb. I turned around to see the line peeling off the open bail arm spool and flicked it over to a massive bend in the rod and a screaming real. 30lb braid was singing in an intense fight and I can't believe I actually had the landing net ready and boated a 89cm 7.7kg snapper within 5 minutes of fishing...Had another drift over the spot and picked up an undersize pearly on the plastic and a nice 44cm pearly on the squid.
I sounded over the area and found some good shows probably big snapper and left it for another day.
I then made a call to try a couple of old marks not visited for some time and managed to bag my other 3 snapper keeping nothing under 50cm and another couple of nice pearlies.
The soft plastics never fired on dusk and the small squire were hard to get away from but the last bait for the night, a butterflied slimmie, managed another good snapper over 70cm that won his freedom[that was coming anyway] due to the net catching in the bait jig.
Headed home listening to my beloved Sharkies smashing the Roosters and kicking myself I only took them for 1-6...

Happy Days..

Hi Scoota

Some nice fish there and a great feed. Had a great feed of fish for diner tonight myself.

I have found Wide Caloundra to be great for pearlies and mixed reef fish but I find the snapper to be difficult to find at times particulary quality fish. We have caught snapper up to 75 cm but haven't been able to do this consistently. I'm fishing the wire weed to get the pearl perch but if i can ask the question what type of bottom structure do you find the snapper on? Is it the gravel or harder bottom. The wide caloundra area is mostly flat ground with a few ledges. I dont want any GPS marks as I am having a great time exploring this area myself.

With results like that, you should go solo more often!!

Great report.

Hi Russ,

Its a good area to explore out there and if you find the bait on a ledge, rock or rubble the snapper will be hanging around the outside somewhere..

Good luck..
