Went out to mud on saturday early morning. Hit the water around 5am and shot out up the river past the Navy ship. There was a boat or two circling it to make sure we weren't trying to pirate the ship and we kept on going.
Aim was to chase the elusive mud snapper as have been out to Harrys more recently as I can't seem to crack it at mud. Best so far is 55cm there so really wanting to crack the 60 or even 70cm mark. Took a mate out that I hadn't seen in a year or so and he persisted to use pillies and I wouldn't go near anything but plastics.
Started a few drifts in the dark, first drift got a 43cm flathead and then a couple of small tailor for the next few drifts as the sun came up.
Tried all sorts of drifts in different depths but did not manage to even see a squire all day. Didn't feel too bad as my mate didnt outfish me too much with the bait anyway but ended up with one flathead, a monster solefish, one squid and a sandcrab in the esky.
Went over to the rock wall for the first time ever on the way back around midday, did a few drifts and couldnt get a touch. Ended up heading back to the ramp without a squire which was a bit disappointing.
Two boats came back around the same time as us a family of eastern descent had snagged 250 whiting for the days effort... can only assume they're still filleting the things now..
Fisheries research lady was at the ramp at Whyte Island as we arrived and said a bloke had come in earlier with two awesome snapper caught "somewhere in the bay" so assuming that was Mossy's effort.
Will have to give it another crack soon to see how I go. Used Bazza's 1/4oz jigheads in both 3/0 and 4/0 size with a mix of zman 4" curly tailz and 5" streakz to no avail.
