Hi all,

Just a simple question.. when you imported electronics were you charged GST when they arrived and marked over $1000.

I know on major item's you would of been but say under 2000 or under 3000.

I have heard about things slipping through but is it common.

and do they charge a flat 10% of the total?
Cheers Dave

As it stands now I believe it's anything over $1000 bucks is 10% GST on total value. One way around it on items like sounder and transducer was to have shipped separately if the value was still there with extra shipping costs added. The falling dollar makes some items not worth it at the mo. As far as items slipping through, it's like lying on the road, more chance of being hit than not.

Did you mean 200/300 instead of 2000/3000?

Sometimes you will get away with it if its just over, but most freight companies like UPS or DHL will hit you for GST as well as customs / entry and processing fees of close to AU$100 now. Factor in those costs for small airfreight stuff.... for bigger shipments add quarantine, security and even duty if applicable..::)

In my experience, depending on what overseas supplier you use, items over $1,000 are recorded as something less than $1,000 resulting in no duties and GST.

yeah I meant a 1000 or 2 over, I have mates that have said they have gotten away with 1200-1500 over.

and Yeah I agree it looks like it could end up right on the limit of being worth it with the paypal exchange rate etc.

I know what your saying mate, I've just found someone with a cheaper price and cheaper postage so i'm trying to work out if it will end up being a saving or not.

No probs - here's a cut and past from the ATO website so you can do your cost/benefit analysis:

The GST payable is 10% of the value of the taxable importation.

The value of taxable importation is the sum of:

the customs value of the goods
any customs duty payable
the amount paid or payable to transport the goods to their place of consignment in Australia
the insurance cost for that transport
any wine tax payable.

cheers,

one is 1369 USD likely be valued under 1000 mind you
other is 1221 USD will be valued at correct price.

thoughts?

If those prices include, insurance (if any) and delivery the US$1,369 will still end up being cheaper due to the customs duty and then the GST charged on the total price, including the customs duty, of the "cheaper" product. Although there won't be much in it either way - probably less than $100 difference when all said and done.

A lot of times the exact same item can be bought o/s for a far less amount. I know it, you as an Australian retailer knows it and that's even with the dollar being sub parity.

Was going to say give Lance a go at least on the trannys but seems he beat me to it. For the record I used Lance for my tranny cheapest I could do US was $2600ish + GST+ delivery + insurance + a three week wait minimum. Lance did it for $3200 ish and I had it two days later. And they've dropped further invprice through Lance since. But here is the kicker.....

The tranny had a programming fault and Lance was a phone call away, and he put me in contact with the eggheads to fix it without delay. I like to support the little guy when I can and in this instance it was a wise choice.....

yes there is gst on anything over $1000 with a $47.50 admin attached. the customs have a scale that they use, electronics is 10 % plus the fee.

If noticed at the point of entry, 2 separate packages from the same sender to the same addressee will/can be combined for the calculation of custom's duty and GST
