Hi all, how are you?
I bought a few poppers over the net for my pending swains trip, and one has no hooks. Just wanting to know if there is a "rule" as such for matching treble size to lures. Usually I just replace existing hooks with the same size, never started from scratch.
Thanks

yeah same size, I find bigger sizes are crap.
Mess up the action and visual appearance of the lure.
Stick with same size good quality unless your getting your trebs straighten out by fish.
We all fish overkill these days, yet what for?

it depends on where and what for
spanoes, doggies, spots and wolfies with a flasha or a taipan I use a wider gape hook and keep the treb strong enough for that stuff
a few of our barra spots we use 6 x strong because 2 x straighten too quick, but then you have the issue of pulling the hooks out of the lure
another issue when changing hooks is different float or sink rates, the little weight doesn't so much effect the action it changes how quick it sinks or swims especially with lures close to neutral flotation
when you cast barra lures into timber it can be harder to dance the lure over the tree branches or mangrove roots if the lure pauses longer before the rise
but working along rock bars this can work for you because barras hit more lures on or just after a pause than actually moving steady
lots of factors in making the choice of although generally locally made lures usually have the best hooks for that lure in that area

Rig it with assist hooks, match the gape of the assist hooks to about 75% of the diameter of the lure.
Run two different legth assists on the tail and short assists on the front hook loop.
Trebles rattle out too easily because they are hard wired to the lure via split rings.
