Ive got a okuma sallina 2 5000 size reel which I run on a 6-8kg texallium rod which I have had for 14 months now. Its been out with me on every offshore trip in that time and has caught a damm lot of fish. The reel had gotten to the stage where it had a 'tight spot' in it when you reeled it as if a bearing was rusting up etc. Which I would of expected as I don't service my reels as often as I should. So today I purchased some reel grease and proper oil and completely dissembled the reel cleaning every part re greasing and re oiling as it went back together. Once re assembled the reel did the same thing had a tight spot So I pulled it back apart again and inspected every piece of the reel. Upon close inspection I found that the main drive gear was actually bent and at one stage of the rotation it pushed down onto the vertical gear causing the 'tight spot'. I took the reel back to where I purchased it from and the boys printed me out a receipt off of there system as I had lost mine and they also agreed that the part was bent.
Being a Sunday There wasn't much they could do So I am sure that I will hear from them in the next cpl of days as to the result When they get in contact with the Okuma rep.
Okuma State on all of there packaging that there products have a lifetime gurantee
I have personally never had a warranty claim with any sort of fishing tackle so It will be interesting as to how this matter is dealt with. I will be sure to update
Thought this may be interesting to anyone else who owns one of these reels as I think someone was asking about one awhile ago.
I love using this reel and have been nothing but impressed for what it has done for me so hopefully it can get sorted somehow.
Pictures are of the bent gear I think the actual shaft between the 2 gears is bent as the handle spline that slides through the gears does not do so easily.

Good luck with the warranty claim, be interesting to see if they cover it. Good of the shop to print out a receipt for you.
And you should pop that blood blister under your nail, use a small drill bit.

good luck with your warranty claim i had trouble with my bearing in my shimano talica 16 2speed and shimano tried to get out of replacing it saying it was due to saltwater use and they wouldn't cover it even though it's a saltwater reel......

Geeze that's abit harsh I didn't know a talica was a freshwater fishing reel! guess it would handle the bass alright :S The guys down my local small owned tackle shop are very helpful I don't think there should beany issues as there is no corrosion in anything so time will tell

Yeah i posted a few weeks back...my main gear is completely stripped in one spot....good of your tackle shop to print a receipt as as far as im aware the Okuma lifetime warranty only covers goods bought in OZ. I bought mine off a friend of a friend but didnt get a receipt...(think he bought from China anyway... would be interested to hear what the rep says as i would like to get some parts to fix mine....seems a waste of a good reel for a few parts and a bit of grease.. Will be watching this post with interest....Cheers...Paul

Why not email Okuma direct and ask for a price, then they will post out the parts.Have heard US buyers getting the parts for only the postage fee.

Hey Burleygu,
I hate to break this to you but its not bent!! And to the tackle boys who should know better!!!
Some of the Okumas have a aligned gear oscillating system where you have to line up 2 dots on the main gear to the oscillating gear and thats what the hole in the main gear is for, to look through to line up the dots, much akin to doing the camshaft timing on a car engine.
If you dont put it back together right it will have a tight spot cause the "cam" gearing is out.
Wipe the grease off and have a look at the oscillating gear and also the smaller drive gear on the main drive gear. You will find a small pin punch indentation in both gears. These must be aligned precisely to make the oscillating system work correctly, which when done properly will usually work fine and eliminate the tight spot.
If your handle shaft does not slide through the gear I would be checking your handle shaft for damage but they are fairly sturdy and dont damage easily.
This information is free but you can shout me a beer later;D
Cheers, steve.

Steve as much as your information is appreciated I am aware that the reel has alignment marks which have to be aligned as one of the gears as you say is a oscillating gear which is oval in shape if the gears are not correctly aligned the reel wont even turn. The tight spot was in the reel before it was disassembled that's why It was pulled apart. The handle shaft was checked on a true flat surface and it was found to be straight. The gear was noticeably bent it had a good 3mm distortion in it. The rep from okuma has since picked the reel up and my guess is it will be getting repaired.

Fair enuf, Disregard what I said!
Guess I couldnt see the warpage in the pics you posted.
I have 3 Okuma reels of this type and have never had a warpage issue with the drive gear(yet) or had any warranty issues.
cheers.

Thanks for that comment Spears i did that over the weekend and got a response first thing monday morning telling me to ring the spares dude in Sydney. He quoted me $55 to rebuild it. Bargain i reckon. Great service so far i will post when i get it back. Reels are about $250 from memory if bought locally so $55 a no brainer considering the reel presents as new on the outside.
so how does a main gear progressively get bent by itself? i.e Did you have this tight spot when you first got the reel? That's weird if it was fine to start off with.

The reel was great from new! perfect in every way but after 11months or so it developed a tight spot. hence the outcome as above. Ive tusseled some big sharks with this reel all hooked by mistake and Its only ever had 30lb sunline pe on it since new and Ive never run more then 40lb leader on it. So maybe It didn't handle the pressure from big runs from big fish or what I don't know. But deffinately something wrong both myself and the guy at my tackle store agreed the cog looked to be bent.

Hey Burley did you get your reel back? Mine came back fully rebuilt for $55 as quoted. Glad you posted this one as otherwise it would still be in its box in the shed. Cheers

Guys warranty normally covers the actual body and not the Woking parts as they do wear. With you good luck with the warranty claim

Forgot about this post until this evening when I was having a browse. Reel was covered by warranty and repaired free of charge. The repair sheet stated that it had a 'bent main shaft' causing the tight spot. It took a bit longer then it should of due to me leaving it up to the place where I purchased the reel from to send/deal with it etc. But its back and its as smooth as smooth and feels like new!
