Mossy rang me yesterday and enquired was I available for deccy duties today on his boat. I told him that Popgun19 (Brian) and I were heading out to lay some crab pots and would be pulling them today and invited him to accompany us to Mud.
Headed out this morning at 5am and reached the snapper spots off Mud just after daybreak.

The squire came on the bite around 7.30 (turn of the tide was around 7am) and there were plenty of zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzsss and a few bustoffs with plenty of expletives filling the air. We managed to boat 6 squire (Mossy 3) from 38cm to 54cm. All were caught on ZMan plastics using my 1/8 and 1/4oz jigheads.

Squire went off the bite around 10.30am so it was time to pull the crab pots. Bait was fish frames from Dick Traceys trip offshore with the boys on "Alexander". Managed 21 good keepers.

Cheers
Barry

Was a top morning out on the water, Cheers to Brian for having us along. Hopefully we can keep a few more of them fish that were so keen to run n spit the hooks. Wife was pretty happy with a feed of filleted snapper and some sand crabs. It was funny the 2.5" grubs out-fished the others. Go the Z-mans.
Tight lines - Mossy

top catch there, what colour Zmans? never tried Zman before and usually like 7" size for the bigger snapper. Might have to start playing with smaller gear again

cheers Murf

Great stuff Dayoo, My eyes are slowly opening to the impressive fishery Brissy has right on it's doorstep. Light leaders are the order of the day in the bay it seems, but bustoffs are the compromise. Hit harrys last night for 6 bustoffs 1 under jew and a big 81cm snap. Some great fishing to be had that is for sure. Ben

Murf Mossy was using little 2.5inch Zman grubs he purchased in the USA (not available in oz) I used 4 inch ZMan new penny on my 1/4oz salmon coloured jighead. Brian used ZMan Baby bass. We all had light carbon fibre rods with 10lb braid and 10lb flurocarbon leader. I think Mossy had lighter line on one of his rods.

Cheers

Good you got out Barry, you managed to get a couple of good trips in lately minus a severe thunderstorm:o How does Mossy fit a little grub on that small for work around Mud? Must have very light line and a superman cast to get any distance.DT has it all wrong, chicken wings or not that sounds like a good effort!:D

Scalem

Mate it goes good hey Scalem, I glue them up to a 1/8 jig head, the body of the grub is pretty much on line with the hook as it comes out just on the end of the grub. That is the deadstick, throw it up in front and let it find it's way to the snapper....
Best I have pulled on a grub (this is sounding suss already) is a 67cm snapper. Gotta play it out and let him have his fun before trying to work him back to the boat. I usually run it on 10lb max FC. Finesse Scalem it is all about finesse!
Alot out there tell me you wont catch a good fish on that size plastic. I laugh and advise them they are right... I got no chance. Same people who say there is no good fish at mud also. 8-)

Thanks for a good little session Bazza and Mossy, the legal sized snapper couldn't resist the little zmans on the 10lb, only caught a few rat sized snaps on the 3inch.

All fish feel to the deadstick on the day, those sandcrabs sure are tasty.

Cheers,

Brian.

Well done Mossy and Dayoo and go the Zmans!!

The 2.5" grubz have caught me a stack of fish of all varieties and they never cease to amaze me.

A mate and I went out on Monday off Bribie and caught 3 keeper squire to 40cm and 3 keeper Grassies all on Z Mans but we used mainly 5" sreakz and 5" scented jerk shadz. We were fishing in strong current with 5/8 heads barely getting down.

My mate started using bait and was getting baited all the time and I kept hooking fish one after the other. He soon switched to plastics but his plastics gear was a tad too small for the big jig heads we were using.

My original plan was to use the streakz curly tailz in 4" but I had the 5" Steakz etc pre rigged on 5/8 heads and they were getting down and as you all know, the zmans just keep on keeping on and even after fishing for 1 hour with the same (pink) plastic and jig head I kept getting good hits so why change?

Sadly our bite period went off an hour before the sun went down which coincided with a tide change and we gave it away.

Amazing bite period whilst we were there (approx 1.5 hrs maybe) though and I reckon anything you would have put down would have been hit hard.

Made me think that next time I might try a 40 gram metal as I used to get the occasional snapper off the rocks when spinning for Bonito down in NSW back in the day on these. Always was a nice surprise.

Sounds like you guys really got into them...again!!

Well done,

Mal
