Hi Guys.

Just bought new boat, and pretty excited to get into the fishing, I'm pretty much wanting to target jewfish as my main target species. My drama is catching the live bait for it, pretty new to this area ( Logan river-Jumpinpin), any tips of where to hunt the correct live bait, and methods that work would be appreciated.

Been spoilt growing up in the N.T. so I've never really had to work hard catching fish, this Queensland stuff is tricky. I've used my sounder and found 3-4 10m deep holes within the Logan river, and tried may times to only catching catfish and eels in them. Also tried various places around the sheltered side of the bar, to only come up with those dam eels and bream using pillys/prawns/slimy mackerel fillets.

Best method for catching live bait in QLD would be a cast net.

Live mullet can work, or nice size live prawn.
As for picking spots thats just a trial an error thing.
In the winter months there seem to be more around the rivers.
In the rivers I have only ever used the one rig, suitable ball sinker, swivel then a longish leader at least 60cm (roughly 20lb), with a circle, or octopus or live bait hook.
Soft plastics are also worth a go.

I definitely have good success with plastics on jewfish......much more consistent than bait in my experience and lots less vermin. I haven't anchored for jewfish in two decades even with live baits.

Hi mate,

Why don't you try fishing the mouth of the Brisbane River and around Luggage Point with lures - suggest soft plastics. Fishing around the structure, drop offs and rock wall with larger prawn / minnow profiles and you should do pretty well. if you don't have an electric motor, suggest catch live bait on a cast net. Brisbane river has healthy population of Mulloway

Cheers.
