View Full Version : Drag settings for 'light' line?

Hi All,
Thinking about trying to accurately set my drag, just for a bit of fun. I've always just grabbed the line with my hand and pulled... 'that's about right'.
Anyway, everything in my head tells me the standard drag setting is 1/3 of the lines breaking strain. For 10lb line, that's 3.3lb, or about 1.6kg. That's not much drag at all. 6lb line would be set at 0.9kg... That's barely more than free-spool!

So my question is this, when dealing with lighter lines, are you still setting at 1/3 of breaking strain, or something different.
I can see the need to set at a 1/3 for big game fishing where 100's of metres of line might be out, but not so convinced when snapper fishing in the bay.

Cheers,

How light is light? I am pretty much with you and do it to where I feel comfortable usually a 6-10lb braid, I know that isn't very tangible but I find if I can pull it off without jerky actions as in smooth I set it to that. I think the leader size also plays a part in it for me anyway where dropping 12lb to 10lb to 8lb if need but find 10lb works well in depths between 5-10 meters.
Cheers.

Are you sure your scales are right? Pulling nearly 2kg with your hand with braid will almost draw blood with 10lb braid. Its certainly not in freespool.

Drags are still set to 1/3 with light line - even more so with light line when there is less margin for error. You are talking braid here, so your 10 lb braid which has an actual breaking strength of close to 20 lb, your drag would be set to about 6 lb, maybe a bit less. For 6 lb braid with an actual breaking strain of 12 lb, the drag would be set to 4 lb or a bit less.

I used to fish 1 and 2 kg pretest mono (not so much now). That is 0.3 kg of drag for 1 kg line and 0.6 kg of drag for the 2 kg line. Still caught some bloody good fish with patience.
