got a call from close mate just_jack to check 5 pots he had set 4 days ago with another mate. he's like yeah its a 15 min walk through the mangroves.... so we arrive at spot x and i soon find early on that im down to my knees in mud.... with a bung knee i slowly trugde on.
He is a crazy man jack he will often walk for hours in the mangroves getting crabs out of holes with his hands. but today with some relief he had told me he had set some pots....
The first pot had a big buck in it and i was stoked hoping to take one home for tea... :)... but alas we found a nasty hole in the side of the pot (a blessing in which we will find out late)where he claims they had all got out of. i was like yeah right :)
we keep walking and come up to pot 2 and from some 50 m away all i see is white and brown as this pot is stuffed with crabs... all bucks...
by this time struggling with a solid hangover and i am sucking in seagulls evan had a vom at one point... struggling with the knee deep mud....... sooo unfit ;/
anyways to keep things short after checking the next 3 pots we could not carry anymore crabs having to let 6 go.... and tallying a amazing 20 crabs. our limit.... he carried 17 back in a traveller style back pack and i had to pull him out of the mud at one stage at he was bogged and couldnt move in a sink hole...
to hear the knowlege and understanding of the mud crab was priceless..... thanks jack for sharing me your tips. and a great day.
We both have huge familys and all crabs will be consumed within 48hrs. It was a expeiance to let legal crabs go as we had our limit....
The whole trip took nearly 4 hours......landbaesed and back to the car( 15 mins my arse grrg)(thanks mate)
i put it down to the huge amount of rain and pristine never been crabbed location
my knee was swolen and had rolled my ankle and jack had twinged a hamstring but OMG what a day i will be sore for days.
Cheers
Big dyl
