Hey guys I managed to get out again on the weekend, decided to treat the mrs so bought her a daiwa aird combo, 2-4kg 2000 spool, 10lb powerpro 17lb leader. Friday night we Got to spot x and set up camp. She was very relaxed on her chair when second cast of the unweighted dead mullet and Bam! Drag peeling and her arm almost breaking she managed a fight like a pro and up came big beautiful red, a grab for the tail and we landed a 51cm jack! Beats my pb by 1cm and new rod christened. She managed another jack around 35 not long after and I got a slightly bigger model.
Saturday we decided to try during the day so we got there in the afternoon and within the bour I landed a jack around 40cm and that was it. Got some more bait and headed back ghat night for another jack and something different, a small bream.
I had a whole mullet with a 4/0 and 6/0 stinger which managed a couple massive hits with no luck hooking them. Another time maybe.
Thats pretty much it. Planning a bit more fishing this weekend so stay tuned..

Whoops forgot to mention. No fish I catch is harmed and all are released to breed and keep me fishing!
After seeing how beautiful they are I couldnt imagine not relasing them.

I can safely say the rain hasnt deterred the jacks for me. She was pretty fat my guess was around 3.
Would of been good if I caught it but very happy and proud of the mrs for getting it.

Great work! Sounds like some fun fishing, landbased, relaxing in a chair, waiting to get hit! Nice jacks alright, love the pic of the 40, he's in good nick. How good are jacks - too good to kill!
Well done,
Matt

They are beautiful looking fish mate, always enjoy your posts, mr consistent on the jacks mate! Does your mrs realise how lucky she is, most blokes here wouldn't have caught a jack let alone one of that size! That's magic, well done!
Should be a bag limit of 1 on these fish, if at all, like everyone has said, too much of an asset to kill, not sure the resident mullet and herring in our rivers would agree!
Keep up the work,
Andrew

Too right, i am yet to get one and am camping the weekend down on the Brunswick River, with the intention of targeting and catching and hopefully landing my first Jack.
Dead bait preference would be.............. Intend on using live herring or mullett but want a back up plan if i cant get any.

Nice big slices of mullet fillet mate and present it nicely on hook don't just feed it 3 or 4 times on hook and throw it out, any other fillets work well too like gar and whiting too!
Good luck

I was fishing a week ago with live mullet and they were getting bitten in half.
I was hooking them through the tail, I did not hook up a fish until I started pinning them through the back around the middle.

Use as little weight as possible too. I fish unweighted and it drifts/moves into the strike zone and with the bigger ones its no bites so you have to be ready.

I normally use a 2/0 on smaller whole mullet, feed it through near the tail and about 3/4 through the back so the leaders still through the tail keeping the fish pretty straight and keeping the natural look.. if they want it they will try take it whole and as they bite down and run the hook comes out and nails them perfectly in the lip

keegan013, you use a 2\0. i was going to go with a circle hook so if i did happen to land one i can release it easier.....2/0 is obviously big enough. I have no idea about jacks and was going to go bigger...

Well, headed off to Brunswick for the weekend inspite of the forcast to land one of these buggers but to no avail. Had one good strike but as mentioned before by many on this site, i was daydreaming and it was all over before i knew what had happend. Rod nearly got ripped out of my hands, all hell broke loose, kicked my tackle box into the water, nearly fell off the bloody rocks, and got busted off much to the enjoyment of a couple of crew sitting nearby watching me !!!! First thing my mate said was what the hell was that! I knew what it was and was blown away by the power. Next time i will be ready.......next time....
