View Full Version : Surecatch Crab Measuring Ruler INCORRECT

Went crabbing yesterday for sandies and kept pulling up males that were 1-2mm undersize and kept saying to the Mrs "Geez were unlucky on sizes today". I then measured the Surecatch device against the fish measuring sticker on our boat and it was 3mm to big on Sand Crabs and 2mm too big for Mud Crabs.
Usually a few mm is not much of a concern but yesterday it was tough crabbing and would have made a difference to us bringing home a feed.
I measured the device on 2 quality tape measures when got home to make sure the sticker was accurate and it yielded the same results.
Sand Crab measurement was out 3mm at 11.8cm
Mud Crab measurement was out 2mm aat 15.2cm
Pays to check before going out just incase the measuring device is out the opposite way. Mine could be from a bad batch.

SS,
If you do a search, you will find that that the plastic shrinks, one other Ausfish member got done because his plastic crab measuring device was undersize as a result, so he went on to have some staino ones made.

Sounds like all you want to do is start a sh!tfight Shawn. Let me state for the record [and for Sh!tfight Shawn] Screamin Semen is quite the fisho and if he wasn't as modest as he is he'd probably post a few pics of insane catches of Sandies, Muddies and Spanners that would expose your comment as the tripe that it was... good fishing to all.

Not trying to start a sh!tfight? Yeah right! That is the sort of comment which has stopped people from posting on this forum over the past few years.
This thread was designed to assist people who might be experiencing the same issue and are not aware.

I never thought to check if my 6 year old plastic crab measurer was accurate and hadn't shrunk in the sun, thanks for the heads up.

Yes but you missing the point, if they shrink then the crab looks bigger... but his crab measurer has somehow gained 3mm.
Incredible I would not have believed it if I did not read it here and at this present time.
I am yet fascinated and enthralled with this topic.
I wish mine would gain 3mm, couple of inches would be better.

Not missing the point Dan, which is to make sure your crab measurer is the right size even brand new ones. I have come across crab measurers before that were 4 or 5mm too short (which gives you an undersize legal crab according to your measurer) but I never thought that they would shrink over time.
It is piss poor that you can't buy a brand name product off the shelf and have it be the correct size.

Yes you are missing the point, if the crab ruler is shrinking then in general everyone gets a crab that is a few mm undersize.
The issue is that his crab measurer is oversize and has not shrunken at all.
Personally I would be happy with an oversize unshrunken crab measurer.

I'm sure surecatch make sure they are a legal catch by being a bit bigger than required cause imagine the lawsuit if someone got done for undersized crabs due to their measurer being under. I am yet to see one undersized from new.. I am sure they are erring on the side of caution especially if they are concerned about future shrinkage.

Hmmmmmmm
I had the opposite once, boating and fisheries put out an offical crab measure with all the DPI markings and such looked very good. Even had that it would not shrink in the sun ect.......
Bonus was that it was already 1.5mm under size.
Had lots of fun with that, went back and bought a few more too....

who the hell makes a measuring device used to make sure your on the right side of law out of a material that shrinks???? WTF they should all be replaced by Surecatch in my opinion.

Read the last line of post #1 and then read post #2 and tell me who is missing the point.
the pirtek fishing challenge brag mats were a couple of centimetres over actual length to ensure no-one weighed in undersized fish. quite surprising really.

I and a mate both had a surecatch measure and both were 3-4mm too large. I have now made my own out of ally and it's spot on. Ben
