Took the day off to take my boys out for a quick fish in the tinnie and then with a mate in the arvo and night. My 6 yo harassed me to take the pots but I thought as it would be daytime we would not do any good but took them anyway.
Part 1
Put the 8 pots in about 10 am with an incoming tide, caught some live mullet and then anchored up on a deep hole on bend. Used live mullet and shop prawns. After about an hour my eldest got a good run on a live mullet but after a quick fight the fish got off. Then I had 2 runs in quick succession on live mullet at the top of the tide but did not convert. Just as i called it to go home my ratchet on the ABU 6500 went off again. I had it on and was fighting it for about 5 minues and then it became a lump on the end of the line. I could pull it in very slowly (light line) but it was dragging something. When I let line out the fish would take it out but after winding it back it it was a lump again. After a while of slowly pulling it up a crab pot float came to the top and after a short while later my leader wrapped around an old rusted square pot came up. No hook....... blast! I really wanted to see what was taking the live mullet. At least I got a crab pot float out of it. My youngest was using shop prawns, no bites. Not even a catfish. Went to check pots on way home. I was stunned when the first pot was pulled up and a huge keeper muddie was in it. Checked the other 7 pots and got 4 keepers in total with only 1 jenny and 4 just under bucks and a few well under bucks. Kids and I impressed with the day.
Part 2
Dropped kids off and picked mate up. Tide well on way out now. Back on the water by 5 pm. Lured a fair way along the Albert River down to where it joins with the Logan. I had read that a few Jacks were being caught where the 2 join. Used hard bodies but no success there. Checked pots again about 7 pm for another 5 keepers and a few throw backs. Cast again for some live mullet and anchored up again on the hole and fished with live mullet. My mate had a run but hooks not set. About 15 minutes later his ratchet went off again and it was on. He played it for a few minutes and then line went slack. Pulled in his line and no hook and mauled along the mono leader. Shark suspected. I had 2 runs but could not convert again. I must be slow learner but I tried letting the fish run a while before setting the hooks and moving the hook up behind the head on the mullet. Still no success. Ended up with 2 catfish in the end and called it a night at 9.30pm. Picked up the pots on the way home for another 6 keepers. A few Jennies this time amoung the bucks.
Used catfish and mullet fames for crab pot bait.
Ran out of twine so had to use the plastic bag thing to tie them up. Mate had already taken his lot when i took the photos. All of mine were full except one where one nipper was empty. Largest was 19 across the carapace.
