Well opened the paper yesterday to see the new bcf store was opening yesterday, I know there is a lot who don't like them but the competition has been needed in Gympie for a long time. Might go for a sticky later.

Yep local shop called fishermans warehouse.I for one will still be buying off them (fishermans warehouse)as they are a hell of alot cheaper than bcf and there bait is pretty good as well.Went for a sticky beek yesterday arv and had the pleasure of listening to a bloke talking about the simrad NSS 12.It was so painfull to listen to as he no idea what the SD card was for.Did i mention painful. Most knick knack items were more expensive than our local bloke.

I have no objection to BCF.... they have their market and the local guys have their market.
A while ago I dropped in to the little fishing tackle shop in Gympie just over the rail line on the way to Rainbow... at the time I was looking to buy a Shimano Charter Special reel and had been looking around at prices.... long story short it was a VERY weird experience shopping in that store and that guy had no intention of selling me a reel... turns out his price was what I was willing to pay but after going through a whole tooth pulling exercise to see if he had any of the reel in stock I got my gas bottle filled and left (with images of The Hills Have Eyes movie running through my head).. I bought the reel at the local Tackle World when I got back on the Sunny Coast for the same price ... and got excellent customer service.
For mine BCF is great if you have a pretty good idea of what you are wanting to buy... their prices are reasonable and if you get a gift voucher for your birthday or Christmas then you are pretty much assured you will be able to buy something with it that will make you smile.

Competition is good where there was none previously.

Why would you want to see their rod blanks? - If you are building your own rods - BCF would be the last place to go. They are not that kind of Store. Not really fair even asking that question.
I used to build my own rods years ago - when it actually was cheaper to do so. These days - there is a huge variety of well built factory built rods that cover every need. Often they are half the price of what it would cost the average Joe just to purchase the materials. Obviously I am not talking about game rods here.......
BCF stores are great - for various reasons. Like most - I try the smaller local guys as well, but often find the staff just content to sit behind the counter and treat you like an interuption to their day......
The way I see it - you can compete on three levels - range of stock, price and or customer service. If you don't excell in one or two levels- you MUST have the other/s - That is where a lot of smaller shops fall down, because they don't have either and they have no one to blame but themselves...
My 2 cents worth.

:):):):) That's exactly why this is a good thing, too often we have to accept poor service or take our business elsewhere and now we don't have to drive to the sunshine coast or Hervey Bay to do just that.

Here's what I meant < Mark..
When a Lollie shop opened up down here near me, curiousity got me and I popped in for a squizz.
Pubescent Lad accousted me and wanted to know if he could help. I said, " why yes, can you show me your rod blanks ? ">
He took me to an aisle and said " there thay are ! "........... apparently.... rods without reels attached... are Rod Blanks.
That was the last time I went there.
To each their own................
They do have the " range " and are usually in an accessible location. I suppose the staff there would have a knowledge of the products they sell. Another good thing is Fathers Day, Birthdays and Xmas............ The old BCF Voucher can always come in handy :)
I always wanted more from local tackle shop, and got it.
cheers

So in other words - you cut off your nose to spite your face ;) - because you asked a raw young kid who had just started work at a new store about something that they obviously don't sell and he didn't know any better. Even if they did sell blanks - odds are he wouldn't have known a lot about them.
Would have been a good opportunity to educate the young lad.
Believe me, having spent a bit of time in retail - you can learn just as much from your customers as they can from you.

NO.... mark... ( sunny ) ...... I was hopefull they HAD blanks.... save me heading to Gold Coast or further afield ........
The fact he showed me rods without reels and told me they were blanks, left me in no doubt that the establishment had provided this fella with minimal product knowledge. Nothing against the kid ( 17 year / old ??? )
Doesn't matter he didn't know much or anything about blanks... to me....... I just wanted to see if they had them.
To me.... blanks, guides, reel seats and thread are all part and parcel of fishing tackle.........
This is probably why it has been many years since I stepped foot inside a tackle shop.
I do get what ya saying about learning... both ways.........
anyway................... Mark is looking forward to his Lollie Shop visits as much as they are looking forward to seeing his credit card :)
OH......... I can still build better rods and for far less than retail suppliers, despite the Chinese influence.
again........... to each his own.

I don't mind visiting Phill but the credit card dosn't always come out. But when you something in hurry its nice not having to drive an hour either way. Also a good place to go and have a look at products and do a bit of research then go and check out the internet without feeling guilty about mucking some small bloke around. I would support the small tackle shop in town if they were half decent.

Had to go have a look on opening day. Sort of looking for a reel for one of the rods I had ordered from Japan. Walked out with a Sustain 5000, 300m Super PE 30lb and a halco Rooster popper. Quite happy with what I paid for it all. Service was quite good from the staff that spoke with. Problem is, the store is only a 1 minute drive from work, may end up sending me broke during my lunch breaks :o

Heading North, it is on the right next to Harvey Norman just as you come into town. Probably 1min off the highway, but visable from it. Take the Tin Can Bay exit and then the next right, right, right.
I drove pass it on Saturday, but kept driving/

Yep, Ive heard we are getting another BCF in Cairns ( Northern Bchs)? I love walking around tackle shops. full stop. As a serious fisher, I never depend on Pubecsent lads for info ( you crack me up Phil!) I will credit BCF on their huge range of lures/plastics. Competition is good.
All retail is up for massive shakeup, as the onward march of online shopping gains momentum. Sorry,Thats another issue.
