View Full Version : Another Stupid Question??
Back In Black

Was told by a mate while trolling one day I should never be heading east early in the morning with a rising sun. Says its just like us trying to look into the sun, hurts like hell!
He reckons the fish can't see the lures due to the sun in their eyes. Same thing heading home in the afternoon, western sun no good when heading west. Is he just taking the piss out of me?? I know there are a lot of experienced troller on here, so your thoughts would be interesting.

I will take a wild guess (since I am not experienced in trolling) and say if you somehow manage to get on the water on sunrise for a troll that is a great time and you head east, you can always head west, I mean if you just went west all the time you would end up on land.
That is my highly regarded expert opinion ::)::)

I read the same thing in a magazine article a few months back while getting ready for this years mack season and again in a link posted on here to a web magazine. It does make sense I guess but I haven't caught one going either way (yet) so I don't know for sure.

When heading east into the sunrise, the fish see a big shadowing looking thingy that is mistaken for a predator and bugga off.::)

I havent picked up fish trolling east in the AM before, but that is most likely due to it being barely first light. Trolling home west I have caught plenty of pelagic fish with a sun approaching the horizon......
Slow trolling deep divers easterly in the predawn does produce snapper though.

For me I think he is pulling your leg !.If you are going East, whats to say the fish is going the same direction, and they are not above the surface of the water either ?.I have not caught to many Mackeral that were wearing sunnies ! :)

I think it is bollocks, most of the suns glare deflects off the water surface anyway.

Does this mean at mid day you can't troll in any direction?

With the shaddow your boat casts you would be ok for a while anyway. Oh thats right you don't get up that early. But i'm sure nobody would just take the piss out of you.

Certainly one of the theories expoused by a certain skirted lure manufacturer from the Gold Coast. He reckons you should do that or if working a reef go east-west and as the current takes you generally south doing that, if you want to start again troll due north again for a bit then start your east west thing again. I get bit every which way. What you might find is all the fish on a certain side of the reef or bait depending on the current. Once you work that out, get into them.

I guess it is just like the no fish in a northerly thing, anything is possible, but I certainly have caught a lot of fish trolling the early morning while runing due east, so like all fishing theories, take it or leave it, untill we find a way to ask the fish, then we are all just guessing.

I will change my seating position when trolling ausfish threads now. I'll tell ya if I get I better strike rate .
A trolling thread and no mention of the keywords rollinator, ETEC, stroke , stroke , record, fishing Lic, Bait v's plastics. ?
On a serious note there is footage from lure and also divers perspective and in different sunlight the lure looks different to human eyes. Wash and airation from different boats appears so different when viewed from underneath and can act like a white sheet highlighting teh lure. No idea if that means it looks different to fish eyes or if it is more obvious/ attractive / natural/ interesting or fish are just attracted to different water movement , surface action, noise? We noticed we got more strikes on one rigger but that may be to do with where it is set and boat wake / wind or maybe we could see into the water better on that side so noticed more action?

Well a fishes eyes are on the side not directly in front so it would make sense that the sun is in its eyes when travelling north south and vise verser. Not that I believe any of this, but make for interesting conversation..Jim
