Hi all,
I regularly fish offshore from Moreton and have been through some pretty sloppy conditions coming around combyuro point. I have never actually had to go the long way round and if I get caught out I'm not real sure how far out I have to go with out getting hammered by breakers. I attached a map of where I think you can get through, is this gonna be better or the same as hugging the island?

Cheers

hi kalb, The best way is through combie point as the passage north is way to far from the bay, the safest crossing time to go through combie when the swell less than 1.5mtrs and on an incoming tide to minimize the rough water. it is only a short passage in rough conditions and much safer than any local bar in my opinion.

The North East Channel is an option but it is a LONG run through to get around, if you have never gone through before then i would go and see it in the daylight first before having it as a last resort, My opinion is the just take it very easy through the pressure waves that build up around comby, Only usually lasts for a few hundred metres then its usually not too bad,

Yeh I always hug comby and never had too much trouble getting through. I was just curious if I get caught out because I've seen it get pretty ugly (strong N or NE when the tides rushing out) and i've been hit by a breaker from the side goin through there in the dark early one morning. Lucky my sphincter had a tight grip of the chair or I would of gone flying.

The North East Channel is a good option, the channel is well defined and is a much better run out during times of big run out tides and easterly swell than the Kianga and the area through past Yellow Patch. Also if you need to do it in the dark, it is a good option.

But as others have mentioned, it depends a little on where you wish to start fishing.

Cheers,
Myles

The Inner Freeman channel is often better than the Kianga, deeper and a nicer run, but it can be very difficult to pick the entrance at times, unless you have a tower!

From Comby Pt to Hutchies via the North East Channel versus the Kianga, is an additional 10 minutes cruise at 18kts, I have found it worth it some days.

Mate - if you think the pressure waves are bad around Combi on an outgoing then you dont want to venture down the Nrth East Channel in the same conditions. The tide rips through there and it gets BIG very easily. In summer I use to cut back across there after a day trolling in the trench to a couple of mack alley spots before the green zones came in - it gets hairy and it goes on forever if you make your way back up towards the M2. Some good cobe spots along that channel but :-X8-)

Stick to Combi - its over pretty quick ;D;D

I only use Combi when going out around the Cape anywhere, but I always have in the back of my mind what the wind, tide and swells are doing. Sometimes better to plan your trip out and return around the elements and going through a couple of hours earlier or later if needed. I would have to have a damn good reason these days to tackle it middle of a big out going tide into a fresh North Easter and decent size easterly swell but have been there a few times when she's standing up, just have to drive through it, be careful and patient.
I don't know whether going around wide would be better, probably just more time getting belted I think.
