After reading the Hervey Bay M&G Post mine is a bit lame, there are a few Marlin making their way south to the Gold though.
I went out off the Goldy Sunday 25 Nov with the Debacle Crew - Vossy, Dom and Richo on Vossy's 9m Cat, Prowler 2. With the aim of trolling for Marlin as there have been heaps of reports of an early Marlin bite off the Pin Bar.
We are all rank amatuers on Marlin, but with some advice from Gordon at the Tackle Warehouse, I was rigged up with four outfits all with small pushers. 100lb leaders and #8/0 SL12s.
We headed north from the seaway and put lines in halfway up South Straddie and commenced trolling. There were a ton of boats out, everything from tinnies to cruisers and proper gameboats.
We trolled and trolled, mostly around the 25 to 30 metre line. There were a couple of reports of fish caught early. About an hour after the 6am tide change, then it went quiet. We zigged and zagged, drank a few beers, then the cricket came on the tv (nice to be in a big boat with a tv!) So we watched cricket, listened to tunes, chilled, sipped beers......and trolled some more.
Most of the boats dispersed late morning to lunchtime. We persevered and Vossy decided to head wide and south. Around the five and half hour mark I was on strike, when we got our first bite! On a 15kg mono outfit and a Pakula Fluzi, a little black jumped, then continued to jump for about two minutes - awesome display! then went deep and slugged it out.
After about 10 to 15 minutes, we had it boatside, but it played up big time. Vossy managed to leader it, then get the bill, and drag it aboard. Wooohooo, first Marlin for the boat, and in-experienced crew.
A few photos, and we swum it for a few minutes before release. We got the bite in about 45 metres, east of the seaway. about 1pm (an hour after the tide change).
High fives alround, and a celebratory beer. As we set the spread again. Another two hours with no action before we headed in.
Its a different style of fishing, hours of chilling, then mayhem and madness! A very fine line between success and failure. It was the first Marlin onboard Vossy's cat.
Hoping for another few Marlin sessions, its shaping up to be a good season. Thanks to Gordon, or I wouldn't have had a clue what to swim, or how to rig it.
Cheers,
Matt
