After reading the Hervey Bay M&G Post mine is a bit lame, there are a few Marlin making their way south to the Gold though.

I went out off the Goldy Sunday 25 Nov with the Debacle Crew - Vossy, Dom and Richo on Vossy's 9m Cat, Prowler 2. With the aim of trolling for Marlin as there have been heaps of reports of an early Marlin bite off the Pin Bar.

We are all rank amatuers on Marlin, but with some advice from Gordon at the Tackle Warehouse, I was rigged up with four outfits all with small pushers. 100lb leaders and #8/0 SL12s.

We headed north from the seaway and put lines in halfway up South Straddie and commenced trolling. There were a ton of boats out, everything from tinnies to cruisers and proper gameboats.

We trolled and trolled, mostly around the 25 to 30 metre line. There were a couple of reports of fish caught early. About an hour after the 6am tide change, then it went quiet. We zigged and zagged, drank a few beers, then the cricket came on the tv (nice to be in a big boat with a tv!) So we watched cricket, listened to tunes, chilled, sipped beers......and trolled some more.

Most of the boats dispersed late morning to lunchtime. We persevered and Vossy decided to head wide and south. Around the five and half hour mark I was on strike, when we got our first bite! On a 15kg mono outfit and a Pakula Fluzi, a little black jumped, then continued to jump for about two minutes - awesome display! then went deep and slugged it out.

After about 10 to 15 minutes, we had it boatside, but it played up big time. Vossy managed to leader it, then get the bill, and drag it aboard. Wooohooo, first Marlin for the boat, and in-experienced crew.

A few photos, and we swum it for a few minutes before release. We got the bite in about 45 metres, east of the seaway. about 1pm (an hour after the tide change).

High fives alround, and a celebratory beer. As we set the spread again. Another two hours with no action before we headed in.

Its a different style of fishing, hours of chilling, then mayhem and madness! A very fine line between success and failure. It was the first Marlin onboard Vossy's cat.

Hoping for another few Marlin sessions, its shaping up to be a good season. Thanks to Gordon, or I wouldn't have had a clue what to swim, or how to rig it.

Cheers,

Matt

Well done on the fish. The bite has been tops one day slow the next. It will pick up very soon.
Did you guys have a teaser out, this will help.
Mate drop ya leader size to 60lb max 80lb. Lures will run heaps better.
Loads of wahoo showing up and dollies too.

Good luck

Nice black, mate. Great stuff. Was the water pretty clear out there? Much current running? Great report.

Thanks guys, keen to get out again, this weekend is not looking as favourable though. Cuzza, I think there was a fair bit of current running, it was pretty clean in close early, but after lunghtime we noticed a distinct dirty water line, which a few boats were working outside of. We got our fish well wide in clean water.

Timbo, thanks for the tips. I've got some 60 and 80lb to downsize to. The fish was taken on the smallest lure in the spread, so we might look at getting another couple. With the cat being 5m wide with the outboards mounted wide, it was hard to get the lures to run in clean water. Vossy is going to look into better rod holders and positioning.

We had no teaser, but it is on the list, any recommendations?

I've heard its been a bit hit and miss, I'd be happy to come across a hoo or dolly next time.

Cheers,

Matt

congrats on popping the cherry
by what i heard, friday was the best bite over the past week

i was on the sticks on amigo saturday, went 2 from 6 plus a nice wahoo as well (only trolled)
plenty of bait, the best bet is to concentrate around the bait that has the fish feeding. the bait school should have a combination of flat sides, cresent or round holes in the school, and my personal favourites being a long column of bait/seperation of a ball of bait above the main school
(it takes more than 1 fish to do this)
if your sounder is setup correctly you can also mark individual fish around the bait

you don't have to be too far out atm, our last fish was 3nm from the seaway in 10fm (18m)

as mentioned above, down size the leaders. it's better to loose the occasional lure and get more strikes than just spending $$$$ on a boat ride.

Matt get a couple of birds from Wellsys, and run some big lures or a bowling pin behind them.

And I'm not surprised the fish ate ya smallest lure, I run a pattern of 6" and 4" lures.

Once you find what they are eating adjust the pattern to suit.

And mate the by catch will happen. Yum Yum.

Thanks guys, taking it all on board.

Vossy got his first late this arv, 15 -20 kg Black. NE of Seaway in 38m. Small lure again - Bahama. No teaser yet, but he downsized to 80lb leader.

No bycatch yet, but two trips for 2-2-2!

Cheers,

Matt
