Yamba Offshore Help

Hey Everyone, I am heading to Yamba with the family and staying at the Blue Dolphin Caravan Park. We are taking the Boat with us aswell for cruising around etc. But on the best day I will be heading offshore. I need help with some locations,distances and description of what I am to expect when I get out there. We will be there around Christmas time. Any advice would be great!!! Thanks Clint

Mate, that time off year I would be looking fo macks, spots and spannos off Woody Head, little bit early but....
maybe someone on here has some generic marks, sorry, I don't.

Thanks Vitamin Sea thats a start. This is our 1st time to Yamba looking forward to the place itself aswell
as the fishing. Looking for ideas on other things to look at and do whilst in the area if anyone has been there!

I've been there for a week before christmas for the last couple of years. Last year was dead, both in the river and offshore. The year before that we got some good snapper off Woody Head on plastics, and the river fished ok too.

Woody Head is about 7kms North of Yamba, the bar is easy.

I've caught spanish and spotties there in March/April in the past, but not at Christmas.

There are reefs to the south as well, but the couple of times I've headed south, I haven't had any luck, and haven't been able to find the reef really.

Have a good trip, plenty of fishing options, sometimes too many. It can be hot and cold though, when its on, its can be awesome.

I’ve been down there the last couple of years at Christmas. I did a heap of miles offshore but it is ordinary. There is bottom at Woody head that holds those Red rock Cod.

There is also a patch called South East Corner that I pulled a few trag and a Pearly off but that was slow.

The Yamba bar is not as straight forward as it appears. There is a large bank straight out and a smaller one to the SE of the entrance. There are large pressure waves on an ebb tide and onshore breeze. The trawlers seemed to go out along each wall then turn hard left or right depending on which way they were going.

I think the further you go south the better the fishing gets but the times I have been there the blokes inside the river on the wall were pulling more fish. There are some serious flathead down there. If you jig up some livies on the entrance walls and take them into the centre wall you will get some nice fish. If you have a 12 tinnie I’d take it.

They get good bream at night on the open beaches. The BP servo near the boat ramp has the best dead bait. REMEMBER YOU NEED A LICENCE TO FISH. You can get it form the servo.

There are a number of charter boats who work out from Wooli so that says something. I spoke to one Yamba local who drives down there and puts in there!

It is a great place for family.

Some things to do are:



If you like a surf it’s a great place.
Throw some push bikes in it a great place to ride a round.
If you are camping you can hire a fridge for bugger all and they deliver it. It’s cheaper than buying ice.
The Pacific Hotel has the best view and watching the trawlers go out at dusk is great. Meals are good, but get in early at night.
Take a drive to Redcliff (off the Brooms Head road) and feed the kangaroos with the kids they will love it. I think I sat there for half a day.
Cooked prawns down there are small and a bit hit and miss.
The beach south of Angourie is a great walk as well as the rock pools for a cool off.
All the clubs rotate their nights for specials and the whole town seems to turn out. The bowls club, Golf Club all share the holiday makers money.
Markets are on every weekend at Ford Park.
Catch the ferry to Iluka.
If you like oysters the Oyster man tucked up in the corner of Harbour Street is Ok.
Tom’s Chinese on Clarence Street is good…funny bugger.


In NSW they have speed cameras everywhere and the little towns have point to point so don’t speed.

Mate I dont know what sort of boat you have but it is only around 30kms to the south reef area of Evans head from Yamba. Plenty of good ground around there especially straight out in around 40m of water. They call it the Iti (italian) grounds. Caught some nice fish off there. If that fails just hang at the pacific hotel. Best pub on the east coast.

What ? ? We have speed cameras in NSW, fixed spots and mobile ones (like in QLD), but the point to point speed cameras are for trucks and only on the major highways.

I'll vouch for the pub as well, have had a beer or twenty there over the years.

Thanks Everyone. The Family and I are really looking forward to it,we all deserve a holiday and are looking for a new place to go each year. We will be eating out most meals so thanks for the help there. We have been going to Rainbow beach for years and staying at Carlo Point caravan park its a great spot with no rules just pay your money and set up camp where ever you want and take up as much room as you need.They have clean amenities and we take the dog and birds, friends come up and stay etc. You can leave the boat in the water right in front of your campsite and head out to some of the best fishing going.Only thing that place lacks is no pool. Cheap rates though :)

The Clarence fishes better than the Pacific Ocean around here and it's in good nick at the moment too. Stay in the river imo.
