Caught this in 65 metres of cairns Weds night. I think its a Yellow Lipped Emporer but it is very orange. Anyone caught some of these.

A mate told me the spear fishos call them Buffalo Bream (dont know why that name) and that they are highly prized as a table fish. Im about to find out, as the fillets look beaut.

Looking at the fish guide on DPI I'm thinking Mozambique large-eye bream. Your fish is a bit brighter in colour but the description seems to match and so does the shape of the head. . Heres the link http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/28_8959.htm

Geez Glen....comparing the 2 pictures, there is no way I would say it is a Big Eyed Bream....there is also no dark patch on the pectoral fin...and the sail fin looks a bit different as well...aand the eyes are smaller....

You could well be right but if I saw & read the description of the Bream, I would not even consider it to be that.

my guess is a Orange-spotted emperor, Lethrinus erythracanthus? Its caudal fin is too blunt for a yellow lip i would have thought but could be wrong.

I speared one on a cairns charter and they called it a buffalo emporer. It is a very pretty fish in the day light.
