Snokeen 01, was some good fish weighed in but was a bit quiet on the reef front. Weather was excellent. I fished the Taylors Beach estuary on the friday of the comp and got some nice Jacks luring and whiting on yabbies and then to the reef with 2 mates (in my mates boat) on the saturday. We trolled on the way over to Fantome Island (Palm Island Group) and in 30 minutes we had a nice spaniard in the boat and then the other mate picked up a big cuda. After that for the the next 4 hours only small stuff for all of us. Saw a big cod weighed in and some other spaniards. With about 20 minutes to go until the end of weigh-in a guy walked in (well nearly running) a very good size barra but forgot to gut and gill it, so then had to get a knife off someone to do the job. I think he had about 5 minutes left. Not sure of the end weight for it. In the end I stuffed up and did not get a entry ticket in time (sold out where I thought I could pick one up on the saturday) and did not weigh in any jacks and whiting. From our reef trip the Spaniard won top weight at 10 kg and the cuda won top weight for other fish species at around 8 kg. Just goes to show it was quiet as they were not huge fish. Pervious years the winning Spaniard was around 15 kg. Anyway, always good for a local comp and will do it again next year.
