I was just reading the "Good Manners at the Bar" thread & it reminded me of when a mate & I had a pretty good session at one of the Deep Tempest spots but on the way home decided to see what was around Shallow Tempest as we had some bait left. We fished for about an hour with not much to write home about so decided to head back to Scarborough. As we were weighing anchor a nearby 35ft+ cruiser started up-anchoring as well. With the anchor up we decided to give the boat a bit of a hose down. The cruiser came up to us & the skipper asked where we were headed. My mate replied "Scarborough). The skipper then asked if he could follow us in as that was where he was headed but it was getting dark & he had no idea of how to get back at night. This cost me a lot in fuel as his cruise speed was 12 knots which meant I kept falling off the plane waiting for him. This bloke had 4 other adults & 3 young kiddies on board. My old mate took him to one side & gave him some timely advice upon return;D I am by no means suggesting that the yachty that asked for assistance in the "Good Manners" thread was an idiot. In fact, quite the opposite as he was obviously not familiar with the area & did the right thing.

Why didn't you tie up behind him and tow your boat home, that's what I would have done saves fuel.

Hi

Don't you just shake your head sometimes at what some people will do and then would just like to leave them sort out their own mess.

if Squiggles had a can,,, he could have jabbed a small hole in the lid,,, and left a trail ?

Awwww crap..... How thick am I?!!!!

'water' paint. That's a 'Dad' joke if ever I heard one. Wish I had thought of it.

Thanks guys.....

Don't be so hard on yourself mate.

We're all entitled to be a bit daft sometimes.

Problem is that some people just take advantage of that privilege .

I've been both. I'm hoping that the idiot side will be less and less as time and experience passes.Eeither way there's no better feeling than helping out a total stranger and seeing them recover/get home/get out of a bog/escape the wrath of the missus.

I helped a bloke yrs ago in the bribie passage his boat had over turned, he was a very large man in about a 8ft punt. it was in the middle of winter the water was cold as and he had been in the water for some 10+ mins when i got to him, he was just and i do say just hanging on to the bow of the boat as this was the only thing still out of water, when i grabed a hold of him he almost started to sink so i got a life jacket on him. took me some 5+ mins to get him in my tinny that almost went under trying to get him in...It did feel good to help someone out like that, but shows you how easy you can get in the shit real quick... it started when his motor died for some reason and he was trying to start it again, lost his footing went over in the boat and then over the whole thing went...

his wife was on the ferry man doing a trip up the passage... she was a little upset when she saw him being rescued.. i dont know what he told her but it would have been good...lol
He had no life jackets or anything in the boat from what he told me later... can i have can of paint please!!!!!!

just hope that if i need help one day, there is someone there to help........ and has no can of paint lol

I believe i am in the process of supplying fishing gear to someone who lost all his through not so clever actions and compounded by house and contents not insured - so yes there are some who take greater risks when they are less likely to be able to cover those risks - but that's life.

I read yesterday about a Brisbane photographer who lost a lot of his uninsured business in the floods a little while back, and only yesterday then lost about $200K of his photgraphic gear when visiting a relative in Melbourne after leaving the uninsured gear in the car overnight. He is devastated with the loss. If it meant so much why leave it uninsured in a car overnight - definitley an artist. I have bought some of his stuff - great photographer.

I do feel for these people though.

The Paddy joke about paint is good if you paint the water but won't work with the "X" painted onto the boat if you take out a different boat next trip.

boating does attract idiots .......
but rock fishing sees the best of them - like the guy in mid winter that fished a wave washed ledge in overalls and steel capped boots:dunce: ...... we warned him & he just fobbed us off till the back wash knocked him over - If a mate & I didn't grab him as he was going in ..... he was gone!!

Have you guys seen the Darwin Awards site?

You win a Darwin Award by killing yourself in a spectacularly stupid way and therefore removing your genes from the gene pool. The awards are amusing tinged with sadness because unfortunately even us dumb blokes leave behind grieving loved ones.

I was fishing in the Rous, a few years back now, and heading for home I noticed a couple of blokes in another boat waving frantically. I motored over and they said their battery had died, could I get them started. I uncoupled my battery and passed it over. The skipper pulls his battery out of its case and the connections to the terminals are an absolute mess of corrosion - so bad that when he tugs on one to remove it the lead breaks free leaving a tangle of corroded wires projecting from it. By pressing this mess onto the terminals of my battery they managed to start their motor and I assume got home safely in the end. But why anyone would go to sea with a battery in that condition I have no idea. For mine they were asking for trouble - and they got it. Hopefully they learned something that day.

Came across a Jetski broken down being blown against the rock wall just near the mouth of boat passage, saw him waving, stiff 20+knots blowing into the rocks so went in pretty close to throw him a rope, just after he got the rope and i started reversing out he starts dicking around with a container under his seat and drops it in the water, he jumps in to get it and we end up almost back on the rocks, just sit down mate i say, so no he proceeds to drop this container not once but twice more, the last time he ends up between the ski and my boat in this choppy water and im thinking hes gunna get squashed, he gets on the ski as we are almost back on the rocks, i tell him then that if he doesnt sit down im done and he can wait for someone else, finally get himoff the rocks and tow back to the ramp, let him loose at the ramp, he gets his ski out and shoots through, no thanks. Makes you wonder.

Probably his phone...

A text arrived with a chirpy sound and as we all know, that cannot be ignored no matter what you are doing. So drifting onto rocks can wait while the text gets replied to. That's my guess.

I have been the idiot quite a few times. Started with the new boat, first dip in the water, standing there talking about the pride and joy to a mate when my son asks "should my feet be getting wet in here?" yep, forgot the bung......mate climbed over edge of boat with bung in hand, of course I had no idea which side of the boat the bung hole was!! I felt like a complete fool, even though everyone I spoke to assured me I'm not the first. My husband now has a saying, "take the bung out of your a**se and put it the boat"!!!
