Hi All,
A couple of pics from a midweek trip last week (Ballina).
Gemfish came out of approx 380m of water as did the larger bar cod. Only had two drops at that depth, because I could see the spool so couldn't get any deeper. Need a bigger reel with more capacity.
The other fish were the result of the first drop in 250m, two lines (2 hooks per line).
Apologies for the brief post, pretty busy at work atm.

Whats the pelagic in the 2nd pic Blane, rainbow runner?
Great work, those seas look a bit choppy!

Cheers, it was a small kingy. They were quite thick, but at least they release well even from that depth.
Ha ha there were a couple of rain squalls that came through both inside and outside of where we were so we got a bit of wind off them. It was quite pleasant apart from about 15 minutes.

Great fish. What sort of reel were you using?

WOW Blane you did that with out over two months and 27 odd pages of planning!!! Maybe you should put a couple of pointers up on "The Ooglies of the Deep"thread.
Well done mate top fish there.

Ha ha thanks Macca, but I can tell you there has been quite a bit of planning. Add to that two years of dreaming about it while I rebuilt the boat.
I think that to be honest we have been quite lucky finding fish on each occasion. I can say that after this last trip, circle hooks have made a difference. A gps that has a decent map with contour lines helps, we just picked a random spot that looked good on the gps and drove out and checked it out. All you need is the weather to play the game.
I've been using a large Stella in 250m but in the real deep stuff we have been using a reel we bought off eBay 4 years ago called an LD 9000. I think it cost $60 and it's loaded with 80lb braid.
