i have just purchased a 90hp yamaha 2st to replace the 70 on my 5m quintrex. while the 70 had a 17" prop, the 90 has a 15"er. i'm sure the 15" pitch will be too low without even testing it, so looking to get a 17 straight away. apparently there is a lot of difference between a 17k yamaha prop and a 17" solas. i know testing each will work it out, but i'm curious for any advice before i flick the coin!

...apparently there is a lot of difference between a 17k yamaha prop and a 17" solas... Sometimes there is variation between theoretical prop pitch, and the actual, however this can also vary between different boats & motors. Where did you get this info from?
A 15" does sound a tad small, but what are the gear ratios between the donks? You need to compare. Is the 90 a new or 2nd hand engine?
... i know testing each will work it out... yep, only real way to ensure you get the best prop for your rig. Where are you thinking of buying from?

I have a couple of 17" (original Yammie and a US aftermarket Apollo) you can try and I'm chasing a 15" stainless for my boat so we might be able to work something out

i spoke with solas, and while i'm in no position to contradict their expert advice, i was a little confused. i was told a 17" solas prop would be better than a 17"k(solas has a larger prop surface), as theirs compared to a yamaha 19"k, but a 19"k was too big for my boat. i had a 17" solas on the 70hp and it spun out to 5600rpm, doubt a 19"k would do that
horse, i'll contact you when i hang the motor on and take it for a spin with the 15"k for the comparison

Well they should know. Good thing about SOLAS is that you can normally get a couple of props at the same time to test, or keep swapping them until you are happy/get the right results - so long as you don't damage the prop(s) ;D
