hi all, ive come across a japanese rod line called lox and im impressed with what i see, ive bought the lox iridium king rod its a 7ft rod with 10-15kg weight, and the van staal reels are catching my eye, the VS 150L. now what i would like to know is will this reel be ample for throwing lures around chasing fish around the whitsunday islands matched with the rod above or should i step upto the 200(both bail-less) but i not to sure if the 200 comes in a RHW version.

I would go with the 150 on a 7ft rod, the 200 is twice as heavy.

The 150 takes 500 yards of 40lb braid.. should have plenty of capacity for lures.

I would suggest you ask this question on a USA forum, with plenty of Van Staal owners.

They seem to have plenty of technical info on gears, spools and differences between models.

Maybe check out the bailed versions too, they seem to get good raves.

The bail less design can be a bit to get used to, so if wanting to go hard on a holiday I would be wary of bail-less as you might need a few trips before you are comfortable with it.

I can’t give any advice on the rod as just there is so many rods on the market.

I have a right hand wind in the VS150 and they are for the surf, watch this link:

The 200 is for winding with your left hand as in the usa it is opposite to us.I use a custom zeebaas right hand wind our way and love it.It is bailess though.

Hi Bignate I have the Van Staal VS150LS which is the bail less version in right hand wind. I have it on a Saltiga Coastal Game 68S 3 and use it for soft plastic fishing on the reef (Fitzroy and Lady Musgrave area, and Fraser Island up to 30/40m) as well as for barra on Monduran and Awoonga. I have 30lbs fins braid on it and the capacity is about 350m. Great reel with a good drag system and robust. You get used to the none bail quickly, as this is a troublesome part on many spinning reels. I got mine from J&H Closeouts on the internet. The reel size is similar to a 3500, and if you are going to be casting poppers for GTs etc trolling hard bodies, you might want to go for the 200. Send J&h an email, very helpful and competative price. Send me a message if you have any questions.

Hi Blokes, I have just started to look at van staal reels. I have never seen a bail less reel in the flesh. The videos I have seen shows that they are a great reel. How is cast & retrieve of these reels done to get the line out of & under the runner & how does it compare in speed from cast to retrieve with a bailed reel when you can just wind the handle to get the bail to click over & start to retrieve.

I got a VS 275 Left hand retrieve.

Great surf reel.

I don't need speed to change over for a retrieve, though I did go left hand to eliminate the swap most right handed casters do.

Thanks Dan, & I have just read your review posted under tackle chat. Well done, nothing left to ask.

Watch the gear ratios and retrieve, that's your main issue when buying.
Other than that they are rock solid.
Mine had some tight drag and had to be sent away for a tune to allow for free drag on a low setting (something to think about if your sitting your rod in a holder on light drag), this is an issue with some.

You need to keep in mind that a bail less version was designed for beach sandy areas.
Sure you can use an a bail less version anywhere you’d like but if most of your fishing is not going to be beach fishing then get the bail version. But it won’t be water proof.

Would i buy another one..very doubt full
I would buy the Penn Torque
