View Full Version : DIY Jigheads
gday. I have been making my own jigheads for the last weeks. got a do it mould from the states and found a few discarded cast net lead. managed to get some paint from overseas and paint them up in the last week. It is still work in progress as i have come across a few things that affect the quality such as temp, the time in powder paint, to paint the eye or not. I have decided not to paint the eye as it clogs up and reduces heavy leaders being attached plus tends to look messy unless the painting process is quick. anyway, let me know if i should remove the barb on the jighead given preferences for z man lures attached with glue.

Good stuff SI do you cover them with a clear coat? Those pinks and reds look pretty good.
nah mate, these are the first run so was still trying to perfect it but its just the paint. i could cover them with clear coat but dont have any of that at this stage.

Si, Powder Paint the jighead including the hook eye. If you get too much powder paint on the eye after curing in the oven at 150 degrees for 25 minutes just poke a hot wire (wire paperclip) through the eye which will neatly melt away the paint in the eye.
Cheers

yeah cheers mate. thanks for pointing me in the right direction re hooks.
Looking good Si, are they the Mustad BLN hooks ???
What weights can you make ???
cheers tim :)
yeah mate, the weights are 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 oz, the hooks are mustad 32786bln which Barry kindly sold me a dozen to get started. the 5/0/1oz is different though, i used owner saltwater jig hook in that one. still refining it. i would like to get a 7/0 or even an 8/0 in the 1/2 to 1oz but no do it exists really. been thinking about making up a silicon mould for those if i could bothered.
cheers mate.
Si clear some of your PM's mate
cheers tim :)

Very nice results si, the 2 pack rod epoxy will seal the eyes in nicely and give you a very nice clear finish. I use cotton tips to coat the jigheads, Barry prefers paint brushing it on but I find that expensive - i cant find brushes cheap enough on the south side. Drop me a line if you are a south sider I have a few molds myself.

Reject shop 500 pieces cotton tips for $2.00.:P;D
I hate wasting a perfectly good brush after one use... But my runs are only 30 Jigheads at a time , Max. Paint brush might go a bit longer with the number you are doing Barry, but not much longer before the epoxy starts to go off.

Keep your brushes sitting in a bottle with acetone and they never go off.
Brian if you want any acetone let me know, we have thousands of litres of it at work
cheers tim :)

Si, very nice jig heads. Powder paint ?Do you heat bake /treat them? How do those mustad hooks go with the squire/snaps?

The mustad 32786BLN hooks are very good and I use them in my smaller range of Hot lips jigs up to 1.5oz (2/0 to 5/0) and in my shad jigheads up to 3/4oz. Biggest snapper caught to date on one is 9kg.

lew, yeah powder paint is.....like a dry form of paint to put it simply. hard for me to answer specifically so i pulled this from a website. There are some varients to this as well.
The main components are resins (http://www.multicoat..com.au/glossary_of_terms) (the basic ingredient), pigments (http://www.multicoat..com.au/pigments) (gives colour), curing agents (makes the powder harden) and additives (the secret ingredients). They are weighed and mixed together as a dust. This mixture is then heated and squeezed through an extruder (like a meat mincer) that melts and mixes the ingredients together. On cooling, the mix is crushed to make a dust of the required particle size. The dust is then boxed and shipped to the applicator.
i heat the jighead in the oven and then pull it out and 'swish' them through the powder paint which sits in a pvc round fitting ('fluidiser') that i induce air into by an aquarium pump seperated by a coffee filter. This makes the powder paint light and fluffy and gives an really nice coating as long as you dont 'swish' it too much. i then bang it in the oven at 150 deg cel for twenty minutes or so to cure/harden. i then pull it out and cool it, you can then put any additions like eyes on, followed by epoxy.

go for it mate. If you do a search on here there are quite a few people who have done it, most notably scalam, tim d and of course dayoo (Barry) who you can glean some great tips from and things to look out for. takes a bit of dollars to set up (breathing apparatus with organic vapour canister, ladel, burner - i use my camping stove and gas cylinder and a $7.00 kitchen steel measuring cup to pour to keep things cheap and nasty, gloves, do it mould, straight snips, file) but once you do, you are away. For me it's just something to do while i dont have my boat :-[ or when the weather is ordinary.
cheers
