What to Buy ( First fibre glass boat)

Im in the process of selling my 2004 Sea jay Magnum. Im after a glass boat with a budget of around $13000. I know that is not allot but thats all i can afford right now. Anyhow i want some that is great in the bay and some thing i can take out maybe 5-10ks in deaper water. I have been looking at the older haines. 17r,17l,17c and the likes and caribbean cresscuter/offshore. Have you guys got any suggestions?

What about a Haines Hunter V16R how do they handle the chop and some swell?

I had a 16r, good boat but too narrow and tippy for the bay. Go the 17 L or C. You can get a C much cheaper as the L's are very popular. Be careful of rot as with all old boats but if you find a good one it should suit your purposes well. Been a few very nice L's on ebay lately.

What about the Caribbean Cresscutter are they are good boat? Cant find much info on them.

It seems the further south you go the more expensive is the boat.
If your patient you'll get a corker of a boat for your budget.
If there's something you like (like those Smithy posted) just yell out. Someone, who might know something about boats, might be able to have a gander and if it's OK send a person like Spaniard King around to get a proper inspection of boat and motor and then come for a drive to pick it up.
Are you wanting an open type of boat or a 1/2 cab??

PS: The Crestcutters are a pretty good older tub.

It take me ages to find my 5m glass boat (Berty) but I found one. It needed some work but the all up the price was well within your budget.

That last one Smithy put up is quite interesting.

I don't know much about the Crestcutter. Worth considering buying a boat from up north as they are cheaper. I got my last two from Sydney and as Finga said there are people on Ausfish who will check out a boat for you.

Good time of the year to be buying with prices better everywhere. Ebay can have some real bargains but if the boat has got rot in it you could be looking at up to7k to get it fixed.

Keep your eyes peeled for a kevlacat 5.1m suncoaster centre console with the tri-hedral hull. Very stable off shore fishing boat while being nimble enough to sneak up the creeks chasing crabs etc. Plenty of footage of these hulls in action on Nomad charters. Could be one coming up for sale soon at Wynnum Marine.

Boats with this budget will need a good look over with the transoms and floor for soft spots. You also have to decide if you want the range of an underfloor fuel tank or not. A lot of these seem to have cruise tanks under the transom. I am not a fan of them. Lots of weight in the arse. You try and keep the weight out of the bum as you might end up with a live bait tank there, a couple of batteries then three or so fishos so enough weight without 60 litres or so of fuel, especially if some of these boats still have 20" transoms, not 25" which are safer.

Swiftcraft with pretty new Tohatsu. Good motor, doubt if the Swiftcraft is a great offshore performer but probably ok for your bays. Got all the snapper racks and all that you guys down there seem to like. Also a winch.

Hey Smithy..."The Tower of Power" Mercs are only the inline six Mercs that were around from early 70's to mid-late 80's.
They had a bad name but like all outboards they are what they are. I'm very happy with mine and I won't be replacing it any time soon.

Good choice mate, afaik they became the Concorde in later years, a well respected boat. Lots of crestcutters around in the southern states, which of course is Caribbean territory.
