Well after seeing a few fish in the Brissy being caught I decided to get out after (well and during) these few showers we have been getting and try my luck.
Last night.
Location: Area near Bulimba park.
Time and tide: Dusk on high and turn.
Catch:
1 Threadfin 50cm
1 Jewie 50cm
1 Shovel 60cm
1 pike eel
1 Catfish
No Keepers
Tonight
Location: Boggy creek mouth
Catch:
Nothing but lost a good one that bent my 15kg rod like a twig.
Suspect a decent jew that fumbled the bait (maybe a shark, but didn't damage the leader).
High on the turn.
Bait used both times was live bait, Prawns, herring.
So they are biting, just never got the big one. ::)
Cheers

Yes could have been, I was fishing the sand flat area near the place were the ships port, but further downstream as there is a bit of a channel there and some bait fish frequent the area a lot.
My plan was to peg that big fish that might come through the channel around high after dark for an easy feed on the turn.
I was using a Daiwa SS Sensor 12 foot surf rod, with an Exceler 4000 on it, overkill I know, but all my other rods are a tad light for big fish and I wanted to be able to get a good cast.
Anyway the rain started and kept going and just on the turn something hit the rod like a freight train!
With 30lb braid and 20lb fluro the rod was bent like a pretzel, and that was just the fish running with it!
Never seen the rod bend like that and if you know the 12 foot SS sensors then you know what I mean, its not a bendy or flimsy rod.
Anyway the fish managed to spit the hook just after I had got to it (yes land-based had the rod pegged in a hole).
When I went home I was wondering why the reel seemed to be performing so poorly when a fish ran (I had lost a few like this on other occasions).
Pulled the spool off and inspected the drag and it had water in it, this would have caused the drag to jerk and slip.
Cleaned it up and gave the washers a thin rub with some ''Cals reel and drag grease'', seems nice and smooth now, though I must say the drag looked pretty flimsy and the washers were paper thin and the whole setup didn't really look up to scratch for a 4000 reel.
I could even see rub and wear marks on some of the washers were the big shovel nose I hooked a month ago would have given the drag a workout.
But yes must have been a good size fish to bend that rod like it were a 12lb spin stick..
Cheers
