Hi all, thinking of staying out thursday night after fishing off the cape, dont really want to run all the way back to the wrecks to anchor up overnight, anyone advise of a good area to anchor thats a shorter run back out to off the cape in the morning.
Cheers
Mick.

Always see boats anchored around the yellow patch area at night. Imo if the weather/forecast is good there is not much point burning extra fuel and going back around the cape, we will usually anchor up where ever we are fishing be it Roberts Shoal or Deep Tempest.
PS. my boat is only 5.1m if that helps.

Just interested... If you don't mind sharing can I ask:
How deep is it at those fishing spots, and how much anchor line is out, and what anchor set up do you use?

Roberts is only 40m at the deepest and Deep T is about 85m. I just use a standard reef pick and let out as much rope as is needed to anchor safely, usualy half the depth again (ie. 40m depth let out around 60m of rope) or more if the conditions call for it. I have 100m of rope connected to the anchor and a spare 60m under the floor for when its needed and join them with a D shackle.

Sounds dangerous to me. Sounds like you need a deckie with very little experience around the cape but a bad case of "ocean fever" hehehehehe I'm available.:P
Best of luck - tight lines - Mossy

I was just looking at the chart for Moreton..... I know I must be wrong but it looks like there should be a great anchorage on the northern side of the island. The Five Hills area seems to have 2-5 meters of water and land arms reaching out to protect some inlets. Looks like its protected from every direction.
I haven't heard of anyone anchoring there and the question of this thread implies that there is no anchorage there. So what am I missing? (I've never been near there)

I am guessing it's got rough water all around but it looks good on the chart....

Ps... I know it's conservation marine park... But what's it like as an anchorage?

Can't speak for the area offshore but the inlet is very shallow. Used to be great banks for getting yabbies before becoming protected by the politicians. Also we used to take a short cut
(4wd not boat) through there at low tide to get to tailor bight from north point. Just followed the stakes that the pro fishers had hammered in and only had one deepish gutter to cross. Of course it is salt and now that I am older and wiser and paying for my own vehicles I would not be that keen to drive through the salt.

You can't get in there. Too shallow. You could anchor up inside north point in a Sou'Easter but you wouldn't want any north to it. The trawlers anchor up there all the time. Sandy bottom though so you'd want a decent anchor to make sure you didn't move. Alternately just stay out wherever you have been fishing if the weather is good enough. Anchor on the reef and continue to fish into the night.

Ah..., Had to be something like that, thanks.
The chart doesn't show it as shallow though.... That's the Navionics iPad app... I will now have to see what my Garmin Plotter has for the depth there.
If it was deep it would be nice.... Most protection in the whole bay.

The area just inside North Point can give protection in a SE. In front of the Five Hills lagoon is subject to current and swell. Better off round the corner at Comby

I haven't been out around that area..... Is there a bar? It's all deep water by the chart... But it would have strong tidal flow.....
On a 10-15 knot day would it be hairy or ok? Worse, better or the same as middle bay shipping channel?
I assume that ocean swell would be the main factor once you are at that end of Moreton?
Thanks for any info... It's just idle curiosity. I will go and look myself sometime soon on a good day ( if that ever happens! ).
