Have a look at the number of starter motor and ring gears from Toyota Hilux's being used. Bang on an Anderson plug and weld a nut and handle on the side for the final few winds and you're in business.

We used to build those and they work well but limited and there are so many cheaper 4x4 recovery style winches on the market now and it seems to me that they are economical, fast, more compact, safer having no exposed high speed revolving parts and you have the built in option of winching out as well as in, free spooling gearbox if ever needed. Mine winches the boat, a 6.6M tinnie of about 2.2tonne off in less than a minute and recovers it in less than 2 minutes.
Only downside is no manual over ride so you just have to make sure you look after it and it's battery and electrical system. I figure that if I was to have an unforseen failure or some mongrel stole the winch or battery or vandalised it, I would just have to sink the trailer and drive the boat on, I wouldn't be winding it anyway.

I believe that there are more specifiic boat winches available with a manual winding operation capability but from what I have seen they seem a bit slower not that that should be a major problem in most situations.

I am not to sure if they still sell them but i would be looking at a 2 speed tigerz11 winch. We installed a number of small warn winches on the front of our boats, worked a treat. You will need to install some anti theft measures though.
