Hello all,
I spent last week staying over at the Deep Blue appartments at Tangalooma on Moreton Island. Took the rods (no boat) and did a bit of surf fishing and jetty fishing on a few days.
Good live bait was hard to come by but on Saturday afternoon a little striped trevally was pinned under a balloon and sent on his way.
30 mins later the Tiagra 30 was screaming and the balloon was bolting. I've never fought a big fish from structure before and it was quite a challange thinking how we were going to land the thing as we had no gaff and couldn't bring the rod down to the beach on the southside (the fish went south) because of the new shed they've constructed on the jetty.
Anyway as it turns out I didn't have to worry too much about the landing as the tuna's fellow marine inhabitants helped me out here. 20mins into the fight and I felt the wack and the noticable difference in the fight. Lasted like that for about 5 mins until whatever had it - let it go. I then cranked like buggery for the last 200ms to wind in the still considerable weight.
By this time a large crowd had gathered on the jetty (as it was nearly dolphin feeding time) and you should have heard the gasps when my tuna broke the surface 10m from the jetty with a 11-12 foot tiger shark in hot pursuit. We dragged the near lifeless tuna over to the rickety ladder where the shark decided to break off the pursuit and mooch around about 5-10 metres out. Down the ladder I went to claim my prize while the Tiger slipped slowly back to the depths.
There was then a mad rush of people to the ticket counter (especially the Asian section) to try and get refunds for dolphin feeding that night;D
I didn't have scales but the remains were surely over 20kg and sushi was on the menu Saturday night and again tonight.

Thats a big bit of longy there. Nice of the tiger to leave you most of it, and shorten the fight by taking it's prop off! Ben

Ah the things you do, to draw attention ????
Shame about the rear end, but i'd say if he hadn't lost it, he'd still be swimming around the bay.
Wont be too much swimming done at tangas for awhile i'd reckon.

Plenty of BIG Tigers just outside Tangas (shipping channel) so no doubt a few come into the deep water in front of Tangas. I certainly would not swim in low light there or at the Wrecks

Oh come on - it would take a tiger shark that big about 30 seconds to get to the wreck from the shipping channel there by which time you would be perched on top of the tallest dredge wreck cabin shuffling cormorants aside ;D

Oh and the avatar is my one and only boy jumping off the boat roof at Tanga Wrecks :o

With quite a few recent sightings of large tigers near tangas I wonder how long it will be before someone is attacked at the wrecks with the amount of tourists on the day tours snorkelling on their bodyboards? :o
Some weekends when the tide is right there would be over a hundred people swimming/snorkelling around the wrecks but that's better odds for me not to get bitten I guess ;D

Nice fish too

Well done mate will be keeping a bit more of a lookout when I am over there witht he family next time we go and stay over there every year in the villa's the missus wants to stay in the deep blue apartments this year. Aside form the huge tiger sharks what are the apartments like. I have been swimming over there on dusk quite a few time's I even remember at the Tangalooma M&G i was in water up to my chest giving my daughter a hand up into the boat and it was pitch black. Wow I will have that in the back of my mind for next time and yes I will not be showing this to the missus either. Thanks for the report mate.

Has anyone seen one of these Noah's in the anchorage at Horseshoe bay?

I have seen dolphins there.... And lots of jumping baitfish.

And lots of swimming adults and kids... Including me. Hang on... Maybe I shouldn't ask because it might scare me off and stop the kids fun.

Sorry if that's too far off topic.

I thank you Bugman for an excellent post and congratulate you on your bravery getting into the water so soon after Noah made an appearance.

Walrus - surely not with all those gin palace occupants tossing recently sucked chicken bones and half eaten undercooked hamburgers over the sides...it amazes me especially when the kids then go over the side into the 'burley trail' and this is usually 50m plus out from the beach in deeper and less clear water. Cheers

I had that happen with a large cobia a few years back at tanga. I'm surprised you were able to get a live bait past the cormorants or their silly rangers who try and tell you not to use any hooks over 4/0 on the jetty :p. Nice fish mate.

Classic mate. Epic fish off the jetty, at least you got most of the fillet back. I can't wait to tell my mate who did a couple of night dives at the wrecks recently.

If you need live bait there try jigging a small soft plastic under the jetty, I always pull in and grab 1/2 a doz yellowtail pike before chasing cobs and kingys on the ledge.
